Block Constructed

On Blocks vs Individual Sets

New 01 Jul 2024 Asked by testamentsglock 7 Comments

Hey Mark! Its my birthday so im gonna get a little self indulgent with this one. Im a huge block constructed fan and have been building cubes to kind of fill the void that the current one set release schedule has made in that department. Based off player feedback is there any chance to going back to 2/3 set blocks being the norm like before?

The players, through the buying habits, have shown a large preference for individual sets versus blocks. We can still have consecutive sets on the same world when they make sense, but even those will still be drafted by themselves. With the current data, I am highly skeptical of blocks return.

Modern Format Evolution

New 24 May 2024 Asked by theactormarkwilliams-blog 11 Comments

Everybody understands that in non-rotating formats old card will eventually get replaced by better or more synergistic new cards. That's not a problem. What upsets people is how fast and extreme that replacement has become.

Modern has gone from a format where you can play any card from 8th edition onwards to a format where you can play any card from War of the Spark onwards (with few hate cards in the sideboard from older sets).

Modern no longer feels like a format that draws from a significant part of magic's history - it feels like Extended + Modern Horizons/LOTR block constructed. And that change happened *very* fast.

That’s a result of making sets that rotate directly into Modern. It’s a combination of the higher power level (sets aimed at a Standard power level rotate at a slower rate into Modern) and designing cards specifically for the format (what we do when we design a set specifically for a format). I do hear from players that wish we didn’t design sets that rotated directly into Modern, but the fact that the top two selling sets of all time (The Lord of the Rings and Modern Horizons II, respectively) rotated into Modern does indicate a pretty big audience that wants it. That said, we have heard the complaints that the first two Modern Horizons were a bit too aggressive in displacing older cards, and Modern Horizons III is more aimed at enabling second tier decks rather than just making cards that are powerful in a vacuum.

Viable Format Card Count

New 20 May 2023 Asked by spiritkhan 29 Comments

How many cards would there need to be for a viable universes beyond cards only format? (including themed reprints)

We used to do a format called Block Constructed which had 700-ish cards.

Set Structure Change

New 09 Jul 2017 Asked by reality-glitch-rg 31 Comments

Will back-to-back sets set on the same plane after Ixalan/Rivals of Ixalan still considered one block (i.e. a Large, Large/Large, Large/Large/Large, etc block structure where none are drafted together, but are one block for block constructed.)?

The idea of a block is going away.

Block Constructed Farewell

New 14 Jun 2017 Asked by aqueous88 69 Comments

I know blocked constructed has been non-existent for a little while now, but can we have a minutes silence for it now that the final nail of no more blocks has been hammered in :(? P.S - Really happy to hear core sets are coming back :)!

I will miss Block Constructed.(lower head)

Block Constructed Format

New 16 Feb 2017 Asked by itappedout-blog 36 Comments

I see a lot of people are asking about Block Constructed as a format. As a relatively new player to the game, I don't see why this is a bad idea. I mean the new sets have been designed with great interaction from a limited point of view. In fact there are now "Box Sealed" events which are essentially Block Constructed decks. Why not just bring back the format to see what happens? I bet it'd be interesting to see the variety of decks that come out.

We tried to make Block Constructed work for fifteen years. Nothing worked. Players just didn’t play it except when forced by us. So we stopped supporting it.

Popularity of Formats

New 13 Feb 2017 Asked by royinversezx 32 Comments

"People only played block constructed when forced" Isnt that true with any format? if you make every PT std you are forcing people to play it, even people who dont like the format, whats the difference between forcing people to play std or block since they both fill the same role of selling the newest set?

We let stores sanction tournaments so we can see what formats people are wanting to play. Block Constructed almost never got played outside of times it was required. Standard gets played constantly.

Block Constructed Impact

New 12 Feb 2017 Asked by axitreii-blog 13 Comments

To what extent does block constructed showcase new mechanics and individual designs better than other formats like standard and modern?

A lot of Kaladesh and Aether Revolt cards and mechanics get used in Kaladesh Block Constructed. : )

Block Constructed Future

New 12 Feb 2017 Asked by axitreii-blog 26 Comments

Do you think bringing back block constructed for temporary special events on magic online is an option for the future?

I never say never but Block Constructed was never popular online. It saddens me because I am a huge fan of the format.

Block Constructed Online

New 12 Feb 2017 Asked by justtheluckofthedraw 23 Comments

I personally was a huge fan of block constructed when it was available on mtgo as it was usually fairly cheap to buy into compared to other formats and the queues were consistent enough, i can understand not running bigger events for it but why not have the option's online for it?

We only have so many resources and don’t want to fracture our playerbase too much.

Block Constructed Unpopular

New 12 Feb 2017 Asked by lordjaroh 40 Comments

Why don't you do/promote Block Constructed as a main format? It would help to promote/sell the current block/set.

We tried for years and years. Players just didn’t like it. They basically only played it when forced.

Coldsnap's Impact

New 16 Jan 2017 Asked by su92 32 Comments

Hey, Mark, this is really random, but you once mentioned that making Coldsnap part of Ice Age Block Constructed might have been a mistake. I just wanted to tell you that a group of friends and I invented a format, and one of the most fun decks works because Coldsnap is part of Ice Age block, so thanks.

You’re welcome. I’m happy that worked out for you.

Block Constructed Support

New 17 Jul 2016 Asked by jakehawke-blog 20 Comments

I know you've answered this, but I can't recall.... is Block Constructed not a supported-format? I like the idea of it for both flavor & design purposes. :P

I think it’s supported in the sense that it’s sanctionable, but not in the sense that we’re pushing people through premier play to use it. We tried for years and very few wanted to play the format without being forced.

Mental Magic Popularity

New 11 Jun 2016 Asked by asw122 28 Comments

On block constructed in the head-to-head you said "It’s still a format and people can play it. Just not enough are currently playing it to make the next Head-to-Head, on formats." - is Mental Magic really that much of a format? It seems way less due a slot than block. I literally had to go and look up mental magic just now to make sure I was thinking of the right format (and I actually had it wrong, I thought it was a weird format played without cards that a friend tried a few years ago).

Mental Magic is a popular casual format with a dedicated audience. That’s just not true of Block Constructed. I wish it was. I personally really like Block Constructed.

Block Constructed Play

New 11 Jun 2016 Asked by onceandfuturetales 16 Comments

Block constructed is still a fun casual format, and as the previous person wrote, great for new players. Blocks are still plenty coherent, so grab some cards, sit around the kitchen table, and have fun!

It’s still a format and people can play it. Just not enough are currently playing it to make the next Head-to-Head, on formats.

Handling Block Constructed

New 10 Jun 2016 Asked by highmastet 20 Comments

How does Magic plan to handle Block Constructed? I'm a new player, and the last thing I've seen on constructed was 2014. I personally think Block Constructed is a pretty good way to introduce players since it keeps the cardpool relatively small but still interesting.

Unfortunately, players didn’t like it and seldom played it unless forced by us.

Eternal Format Misconception

New 16 Feb 2016 Asked by love-ashually 33 Comments

I'd always assumed Modern was an Eternal Format because cards rotate into it, but not out (except through banning).

Eternal doesn’t mean non-rotating. Invasion Block Constructed also doesn’t rotate. It has to do with having access to all (okay, most) of the cards in Magic.

Block Constructed Popularity

New 06 Sep 2015 Asked by jakehawke-blog 16 Comments

Will the new 2-set system lead to more instances of or support for Block Constructed events? It seems that WotC has been phasing it out recently, but I kind of like the clarity and consistent flavor of it. :)

Block Constructed has proven over time to be an unpopular format almost exclusively played because we required it at Pro Tours and PT Qualifiers. Players almost never played it of their own volition.
