Assault Formation

Creatures' Power and Toughness

New 04 Nov 2021 Asked by thefirstsliver 34 Comments

Hi Mark, given that green is 4th in toughness higher than power creatures, why are so many cards like Assault Formation and Arcades, the Strategist at least part green? On a similar note, why is white 1st in such cards if it's supposed to be a particularly aggressive color? (PS, Crimson Vow looks really cool, good job!)

Fourth just means other colors have more. White has two parts, one very aggressive and one very defensive.

Card Trivia

Hi Mark, today is finally my birthday! Can I get some trivia on one of my three favorite cards - door to nothingness, assault formation, or sundial of the infinite?

When I originally designed Door to Nothingness it said “Destroy target creature or player.” The Rules Manager sadly changed to the existing template. Happy Birthday!

Assault Formation Debate

As a Color Pie aficionado, I have to admit that I have serious problems with Assault Formation. By my understanding, the abilities on the card feel WAY more white than green (well, one feels secondarily green, but still primarily white). Also, the art and name also feel more white. Am I totally misreading the card, or is this another Hornet Sting?

The main ability comes from Doran and is relatively undefined (other than being White, Black and/or Green). Green has done toughness pumping so that’s also in color pie. The stretch is allowing defenders to attack which is a primary White thing but it doesn’t undercut a Green weakness so it is more color pie bend than break.

On Assault Formation

I don't really like assault formation because I think that the Doran ability is so special, so it should've been kept only to multicolored cards. What's your opinion?

I don’t feel this is the kind of mechanic that there is great value of restricting it to multicolor. Multicolor puts a lot of limits on it that I don’t think are necessary.
