Archaeomancer

Supertype Effect Example

For the instant as a super type crowd: if you reprinted Archaeomancer after making instant a super type, it would have the same printed text as Anarchist, yet do something totally different. That's probably a really bad thing.

That’s a fine example.

Exile Clause Reasoning

Is the Exile clause on Rescue from the Underworld to stop Archaeomancer/Eternal Witness looping?

It’s to stop all sorts of loops.

Card Return Language

I was asked this recently: "In MTG, can you "return" cards from your graveyard to your hand, which were never in your hand to begin with? Such as Archaeomancer returning something that you lost to a Tome Scour. Logically you shouldn't be able to, but i suspect that in this case mtg probably shirks logic and lets you do it anyway?". It never occured to me that the particular phrasing of Zombify and Archeomancer effects could confuse. Has Wizards considered rephrasing them?

You can “return” things that were never in your hand. And yes, that wording has come up as being confusing.

Card Power Levels

I've been looking at the official m13 previews and am confused. Why searing spear? it's a strictly worse lightning bolt. Similarly, Archaeomancer looks like you're trying to fix snapcaster.

Magic prints cards that are “strictly worse” than previously printed cards. Why? Because that is the nature of a trading card game. Everything ebbs and flows including power level of individual cards.

Red Archaeomancer Query

New 11 Jun 2012 Asked by wobbles 4 Comments

I really like Archaeomancer, but I'm a little disappointed it isn't red. Reloading (returning an instant or sorcery to hand) seems very red, and like it could be a good mechanic for red at common. It even gives red a few late game spells for multiplayer. Any chance we could see this in the future?

Whenever we let all the colors return things from the graveyard, red gets sorceries. I guess that’s something we could look at doing more often.
