Templating Issue Query

New 14 Apr 2019 Asked by jhoald 48 Comments

Who can I ask about templating issues? My playgroup is very confused by the card "Book Devourer" from Guilds of Ravnica. It says "When this deals damage to an opponent, you may discard your hand. If you do, draw that many cards". We cannot figure out if "that many cards" is equal to the damage dealt or the number of cards discarded.

The cards discarded. It’s a Winds of Change effect.

Red Rummaging Mechanic

Can red force opponents to rummage (like, force them to discard some cards, then draw that many cards)?

It can force Winds of Change (discard while hand and draw equal to discard), but usually it makes everyone do it.

Red Self-Milling

Would red self milling be acceptable in terms of flavor?

It can rummage or Winds of Change.

Boros Wheel Idea

Boros wheel (draw 7, not draw the same as discarded) if or when?

Major if. The Council of Colors still debates about how red Wheel of Fortune (as opposed to Winds of Change) is. Adding white doesn’t help that argument any.

Wheel Effects Dispute

Which side of the "are wheel effects red" argument are you on?

I think Winds of Change is red but Wheel of Fortune is not. Too much potential card draw fur ted.

Color Pie Consistency

Do you view the 'Chance' part of Leave to Chance as a color pie break? It seems like much *much* better version of Chaos Warp.

That’s Winds of Change. Red can do that.

Restrictions on Red

Could red get, "target opponent discards a land"?

No. Red doesn’t do permanent discard (with the exception of Wheel of Fortune and Winds of Change variants).

Wheel Effects Colors

I've been wondering about wheel effects and where it currently stands in the color pie. From what you've said here and recent cards; Red has 'winds of change' effect and sometime 'wheel of fortune' effect. Blue has 'windfall' effect and sometime 'timetwister' effect. Black has 'wheel' effect minus one and blue/black also has 'windfall'. Is this a correct assessment? why is this effect in so many colors?

It’s an effect that’s relatively infrequent that we’ve never nailed down. We should.

Red Wheel Effects

Does red still have access to Wheel of Fortune-type effects?

Winds of Change, for sure. There is still much debate on Wheel of Fortune.

Red-Green Timetwister

New 25 Jan 2013 Asked by tablegames-blog-blog 2 Comments

So, with that being said about Winds of Change vs. Wheel of Fortune in red: could a Timetwister that only lets people redraw as many cards as they discarded be RG?

Probably.  Note that when I said red isn’t about “card advantage” I meant when drawing cards. Red does mighty fine getting card advantage from its direct damage for example.

Wheel of Fortune Effect

New 25 Jan 2013 Asked by brothervalencio-deactivated2021 5 Comments

When you say "Wheel of Fortune" effect, do you specifically mean one that dumps whole hands, or one that is a symmetrical draw/discard for each player? Because we had the former in Morningtide (Sensation Gorger) and the latter in Magic 2010 (Burning Enquiry).

Red does what we call Winds of Change effects all the time. That is when you discard your hand and draw the same number you discarded.
