Warping Wail

Colorless Cards Flavor

To clarify, I am wondering if a card like warping wail could be printed with To clarify, I am wondering if a card like warping wail could be printed with an artifact (magical machine) flavor instead of an eldrazi one. But if an Eldrazi’s Warping Wail is a depiction of an Eldrazi taking an action, could an automaton emitting an energy blast be a reasonable space to explore colorless themed instants/sorceries/enchantments?

We have done colorless instants and sorceries with non-Eldrazi flavor. They’re not necessarily tied to Eldrazi.

Warping Wail Card and Precedent

Kinda sad not to get answers about the colorless slice of the color pie. Very curious how Warping Wail was developed and whether it is precedent for what colorless is allowed to do.

Colorless doesn’t have its own slice and Warping Wail is not precedent.

Errata on Starter Cards

New 12 Jul 2021 Asked by sac-ld 16 Comments

Should the "starter" cards (POR, P02, PTK) that received errata to change them into Instant cards be reverted to Sorcery cards with flash so that cards like Déjà-Vu can interact with cards like Just Fate as intended? It can be confusing in a chaos draft if some one casts Kozilek's Pathfinder the other player responds with False Summoning which can't be countered by Warping Wail. Alternatively should the cards from the set that only specify Sorcery just be changed to say Instant or Sorcery?

It was never the intent that they didn’t act like instants. We just didn’t want to teach players what an “instant” was in Portal.

Colorless Counterspell

Colorless gets removal, exile, every keyword ability, and pretty much every aspect of the color pie - could it get a (nonconditional, Warping Wail doesn’t count) counterspell?

We’ve chosen not to do that.

Colorless Counterspells

"There are some effects, like counterspells, we tend to keep out of colorless." Not of This World and Warping Wail would like a word. both are colorless counterspells. pure colorless at that, not devoid colorless.

We at times do things that we tend not to do.

Warping Wail's Color

How "in color" is Warping Wail? Having these sort of effects on what's essentially Eldrazi Charm is so strange, design-wise.

We allow colorless (usually on artifacts but sometimes on spells with things like the Eldrazi) access to various effects. We just cost them so they don’t undermine what a color good at the effect can do cost wise.

Colorless Cards Philosophy

Hi Mark! Gonna re-try for my birthday ask because it probably drowned in the sea of asks. Can you tell me the philosophy behind making colorless cards like Deceiver of Form and Warping Wail?

We were trying to create the Eldrazi to be a force that mostly circumvents the color pie because they predate it. Happy Birthday!
