Tormented Soul

Shadow Mechanic in Standard

New 17 May 2023 Asked by szwanger 29 Comments

For the discussion about bringing shadow back into Standard, the format has previously included fairly efficient creatures with "can't block" and "can't be blocked" (Tormented Soul, 1/1 for 1 mana; and Inkfathom Infiltrator, 2/1 for 2 mana) which is fairly similar to shadow. Neither was played much in Standard, and in Limited they were played sometimes but didn't break anything.

Just because we’re willing to do one (similar) card, doesn’t mean we necessarily want to do a whole mechanic of something.

Card Color Controversy

Mark I am very upset with Marang River Prowler from fate reforged. Can't block or be blocked is black(see Tormented Soul) and self recursion on a creature that can't block is black(see Bloodghast or Gravecrawler). Why is this a blue card? You don't even have to be playing black with it, you could run green instead.

Returning from the grave to the battlefield is a Black and Green thing thus the requirement of a Black or Green thing. Blue gets cannot be blocked all the time. Yes, cannot block is a bleed but a minor one.

Cipher's Constructed Playability

Was the constructed playability of Cipher considered in R&D for extensive periods of time? I feel like the fact that Invisible Stalker still exists will break it, not to mention Tormented Soul, and other inevitable unblockables in Dimir.

Invisible Stalker caused much more problems in limited than constructed and it won’t exist in the Gatecrash limited environment.
