Terramorphic Expanse

Land Selection Rationale

New 13 Apr 2023 Asked by followingthemagic 31 Comments

Why does a set get or not get evolving wilds or terramorphic expanse? MOM has plenty of three color legendarys people would want to fix for, or even heavy single color. Seemed like an interesting lack of inclusion.

There’s a larger balance of lands that gets chosen to provide enough color fixing without making too much.

Card Names and Flavor

New 18 Aug 2022 Asked by theshunpiker 33 Comments

I have been searching to see if you have answered this question, because I am sure you have, but I can not find it. Why are identical cards printed with different names, like Terramorphic Expanse | Evolving Wilds, Mind Control | Persuasion, or Llanowar Elves | Fyndhorn Elves| Elvish Mystic?

If cards aren’t problematic in number, we will sometimes change the flavor to better match the creative of the set it’s in.

Choosing Card Version in Reprints

New 20 Jul 2022 Asked by born-hurt 25 Comments

When reprinting cards like Evolving Wilds/Terramorphic Expanse or Meandering River/Coastal Tower, how do you decide which version of (functionally) the same card gets printed in which product?

Usually, it’s a call by the creative team which best fits the world.

Evolving Wilds vs Terramorphic Expanse

New 01 Sep 2021 Asked by titania776 54 Comments

Is there any particular reason that Evolving Wilds gets printed in premier set and Terramorphic Expanse hasn’t been since Core set 2011? I understand not wanting them together but why not alternate?

My guess is the name Evolving Wilds just fits better with most worlds.

Understanding Terramorphic Expanse

RE: "No. We don’t want fetchlands in Standard. Fetchable dual lands is only part of the problem. " -- So that means no more Terramorphic Expanse? :(

It’s not a dual land.

Can you please (virtual) high five whoever is responsible for putting Terramorphic Expanse in JumpStart instead of Evolving Wilds? The new art is beautiful.

Will do.

Preference for Evolving Wilds

New 10 Apr 2020 Asked by pforpizza 37 Comments

Hi Mark, I just saw in the full spoiler the reprint of Evolving Wilds. I'm genuinely curious, why there's this overwhelming preference of it over Terramorphic Expanse? I know the former one's name can fit in more planes, but is it only a flavor reason? Thanks.

I think it’s the major reason.

Duplicate Basic Fetches?

Would you ever put both Terramorphic Expanse and Evolving Wilds in the same booster set (Standard or supplemental)?

Unlikely.

Land Retrieval Methods

New 24 Apr 2018 Asked by marcusrehnberg-blog 49 Comments

Would it be possible to allow cards that add basic land cards to play or hand without shuffling your deck to find them? For instance a Terramorphic Expanse that just sacrificed itself to put a basic land of your choice into play tapped.

We experimented with that. We kept shuffling the lands into our deck when the game ended.

Evolving Wilds Reprints

New 06 Jan 2018 Asked by theroguepyro-blog 49 Comments

Why do you guys continually reprint Evolving Wilds when Terramorphic Expanse has an INFINITELY cooler name?

We let the creative team choose the name the better suits the world.

Is Terramorphic Expanse ever coming back or is Evolving Wilds here forever?

It could come back if the flavor is a better fit for the world.

Land Card Flavor

New 24 Mar 2017 Asked by bitterrootmtg 36 Comments

What is the flavor difference between Terramorphic Expanse and Evolving Wilds? Their flavor seems fairly interchangeable to me.

The words imply different things. Teramorphic implies an external change while Evolving implies an internal change.

Terramorphic Expanse Trivia

Hey Mark! I wanted to start of by thanking you for everything you've done for magic! Also, today is my birthday! I was wondering if you could give me some trivia on my favorite cards, Terramorphic Expanse /Evolving Wilds? Thanks!

People always ask why we chose whichever version we chose when putting it into a set. The answer is that it’s left to the creative team to pick which bane is more appropriate for the flavor of the current set.Happy Birthday!

Purpose of Similar Reprints

New 03 Mar 2016 Asked by barracius 41 Comments

What is the purpose of reprints in all things but name? An example that immediately comes to mind is Evolving Wilds and Terramorphic Expanse.

Sometimes it doesn’t fit the creative. Sometimes we’re upgrading the name.
Sometimes we want to let you play with right copies in a deck.

Terramorphic Vs Evolving

New 24 Jul 2015 Asked by lizthegoddess 15 Comments

In a hypothetical world where you called all the shots and were the Uber-Judge, let's say someone was using Terramorphic Expanse instead of Evolving Wilds in a standard game, where Terramorphic Expanse isn't actually legal. Should that person be barred from the tournament?

They need to be informed they have an illegal deck. What happens next has to do with what type of tournament it is.

Evolving Wilds Favoritism

New 08 May 2015 Asked by bucketsworth 29 Comments

Why is it that Evolving Wilds has been printed more times than Terramorphic Expanse? They are functionally identical, but Evolving Wilds seems to be favored as the reprint. Disclaimer: I really just want to see Terramorphic Expanse with new art.

My guess is the creative team feels Evolving Wilds as a name fits in more worlds.

Evolving Wilds Future

New 09 Nov 2014 Asked by annorax 28 Comments

Will Evolving Wilds be reprinted every time a set needs a generic basic land-fetching land from now on? Or is Terramorphic Expanse still considered for that slot when it exists?

Both are considered.

Evolving Wilds Creation

New 08 Nov 2014 Asked by ruhruhrandy 26 Comments

Why was the decision made to make Evolving Wilds instead of Terramorphic Expanse?

We use it all the time so having two names to better match creative was felt to be valuable.

Choosing Land Cards

How do you decide whether to use Evolving Wilds or Terramorphic Expanse in a set / product?

Mostly creative but sometimes it’s about how many we want in a certain format, 4 or 8.
