Teferi, Hero of Dominaria

Teferi Emblem Mechanics

You’ve said before that “destroy target permanent” should only be printed on WB and BG cards. Teferi, Hero of Dominaria gives you an emblem with “Whenever you draw a card, exile target permanent an opponent controls.” despite being a WU card. Is this a break, or a bend?

It’s a bend. White can pinpoint destroy any permanent type except land, and by the time you jump through the hoop, it’s late enough in the game that destroying a land is just going to be a very low option.

Planeswalker Quality Worry

A concern Ive had some of my friends talk about with WAR is that, with 36 walkers, the average quality per walker will decrease and we will end up with a lot of planeswalkers closer to “2 mana Tibalt” power than something like Teferi, Hero of Dominaria or even Vivien Reid. What say you on this matter?

There’s a famous quote by car inventor Henry Ford (which he might not have ever actually said): “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.” People can only see the future through the lens of the past. The same is true with planeswalkers. The most we’ve ever put in a set is 6. 36 is six times that. The most common number of planeswalkers is 3. 36 is twelve times that. Sets sometimes have 2. 36 is eighteen times that. War of the Spark, by definition, can’t just be planeswalkers the way we’ve always done them. The challenge of the design was rethinking a lot of things including what tools were available to us. War of the Spark is not going to be planeswalker status quo, but then innovation seldom is.
