Confusion Over Islandfish Jasconius

New 22 Jan 2022 Asked by nerdyhologrampizza 51 Comments

“R&D Secret Lair only lets the card play as written. It doesn’t change the rules of the game. That means it allows Islandfish Jasconius to be an Island (and again it not being a land keeps it from tapping for blue)” what? How is IFJ an island, even with R&D secret lair? It has island in its name. But it’s a creature. Swamp Mosquito isn’t a swamp. Soldier of Fortune isn’t a soldier. That seems a little out there, even for acorn.

All versions of the card have Island Fish as the printed creature type (it’s just Fish in Oracle). 🐿 - Ah, Alpha.

When is the Island Fish Jasconius / Swamp Mosquito / Mountain Goat / Forest Bear cycle going to be completed?

Development keeps killing my Plains Jane. : )

Poison Mechanics

Are you responsible for Swamp Mosquito or any of the three Mirage-block poison cards? I'm curious why they're mostly Black when Green seems a better creature fit - is it the idea that poison seems somehow malign or just a question of color balance?

Poison makes sense in Black and Green.

Swamp Mosquito Origins

Did you design Swamp Mosquito? If I remember, you did some work on Alliances, and being that it's a cool little poison maker that got reprinted in Time Spiral it feels a lot like one of yours.

I did not design it. I was a fan though.

Alternate Win Mechanisms

Alternate win tends to be alternate to how much damage your opponent takes. Poison and Poisonous were both about how often your opponent was damaged by a Poisonous creature (or how often Swamp Mosquito or Suq’Ata Assassin attacked unblocked) as opposed to how much damage they took. Poisonous 1 needed 10 hits. Poisonous 3 needed 4 hits. Infect cared about how much damage your opponent took, like double strike that doesn’t care about life gain, so it felt “less” alternate win.

Would poisonous feel less alternate win if every creature was Poisonous 2? Also, there were ways to get poison other than creature damage such as proliferate. Did it feel more alternate win when you got proliferated to death? I’m not trying to be a smart ass, I’m honestly trying to understand the difference. (Because I currently don’t.)
