Solemn Simulacrum

Iconic Artifacts

New 14 Jun 2018 Asked by crab4communism 41 Comments

you wouldn't consider phyrexian dreadnought an iconic artifact creature? or karn, silver golem? or even solemn simulacrum?

I said there wasn’t an iconic creature type for artifacts not that they’re were iconic artifact creatures. Different uses of “iconic”.

Solemn Simulacrum Origins

Didn't know Birthday trivia was a thing! My birthday was.... well, a couple weeks ago. Any chance I could get some belated trivia on Solemn Simulacrum?

Solemn Simulacrum was Jens Thoren’s prize for winning the Magic Invitational. His version was a Blue/Green multicolor card but we turned it into an artifact creature because we put it in Mirrodin, a heavily artifact set. Happy Belated Birthday!

Solemn Simulacrum fetches lands and draws cards. Would it be green if it weren't an artifact?

Possibly.

Artifact Creature Typing

New 26 Oct 2012 Asked by waskou 2 Comments

Hey MaRo, I was just comparing versions of Solemn Simulacrum. I noticed that the original Mirrodin printing doesn't have a creature type. Was this a common practice around that time for Artifact Creatures? (I only jumped in during Time Spiral, where I think every Artifact Creature had a creature type out of the box)

Once upon a time artifact creatures didn’t always have creature types. Many years back we changed it so that every creature had a creature type (except for Nameless Race because we love a good joke). This meant we gave creature types to every creature that didn’t have one, well except you know who.

Invitational Cards Update

are you still making the invitational cards, like dark confidant, solemn simulacrum, and snapcaster? Whos card is in RtR?

Snapcaster Mage was the final Invitational card.

Reprinting Strategy

New 04 Jun 2012 Asked by necrogenesis 6 Comments

When popular cards are reprinted, some seem like they are selected to have a large impact on Standard and Limited formats (Harrow, Solemn Simulacrum) while some seem like they are selected to have as little impact on the various formats as possible (Nantuko Shade, Goblin Grenade). Why reprint cards that were once good or popular if you're just going to make them bad the second time around?

Reprinting cards means a lot more than making something available in Standard. For players that weren’t around the first time the card was printed, for example, it’s an opportunity for them to get the card.

Poem Invitation

I have written a poem called "Solemn Simulacrum", the name of the card just seemed to fit what I was writing. Would you like to read it?

Yes, I would.

Favorite Card Nickname

Fun (potentially) non-AVR question time! What's your favorite nickname for a card? For example, I've seen Solemn Simulacrum being called Sad Robot.

I have a lot of favorites. My most recent was probably Chainsaw for Trepanation Blade (it was the design name) in Innistrad.
