White's Card Draw Mechanics

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by shadowman2099 41 Comments

I gotta say, I am not a fan of the "once per turn" draw in White. It just doesn't have the same mechanical bite that other colors have like Red's impulse draw/rummaging or Black's sacrifice for power. Can we see more of a push in forms of White card draw that thematically fit, like charity (Secret Rendez-Vous), compensation (Discerning Financier), and retribution (Esper Sentinel) with less ETB card draw and "draw a card because you did something" (Wedding Announcement, Welcoming Vampire)?

The flavor is white draws long, that is it sets up the proper condition and then gets rewarded with card draw over time. It’s slow, methodical card draw.

Wraths Insights

If my searching skills aren't failing me, there've been 3-4 Wraths that keep your own board alive, all in black, like you said. (Dread Cacodemon, In Garruk's Wake, Overwhelming Forces for 1v1, Plague Wind) There've been two instant speed wraths (Fated Retribution, Rout) So it looks like one sided wraths are more likely.

Design Space for Counters

New 24 Jul 2021 Asked by fenjen 44 Comments

I have a +1+1 counters deck in EDH but I'm not particularly a player who enjoys simple stompy decks. Because of this, I really like the cards that use counters as a resource, instead of just using them only to attack. To me this gives a really interesting dynamic where you have to evaluate whether you want to decrease your board power to gain something else (e.g. Retribution of the Ancients) However, the mechanic feels underused right now. Do you think there is more design space for this?

There is some space for it, but it creates a lot of tension.

Do you know who wrote the flavor text for Retribution of the Meek?

I sadly do not. It wasn’t me.

White's Card Destruction

New 11 Mar 2014 Asked by alkiorincognito-blog-blog 17 Comments

"White is the color with the most answers. For example, it’s the one color that can destroy all the card types (<*save planeswalkers*>). What keeps this in check is that its card flow isn’t as good as the other colors." Fated Retribution & Planar Cleansing?

Yes, white has started destroying planes walkers. Even more reason to be careful with white card drawing.
