Gatherer Rulings Issue

New 22 Nov 2023 Asked by the-othercody 43 Comments

Hi Mark,Wanted to forward this to you to see if you could help. I'm a judge and one of the best resources we have is Gatherer rulings. It allows us to shortcut searching the Comprehensive Rules for an answer at times and, more importantly, is very useful for a players settling kitchen table disputes. The problem is, we have a few Gatherer rulings that are incorrect. The examples that come to mind are the typo on Opposition Agent and the wholly incorrect ruling on Triumph of Saint Katherine. These have been known about for some time by Wizards and haven't been corrected. Could you please forward these to the appropriate parties? Also, where is the best place to forward findings like this other than bugging you, Matt Tabak, or Jess Dunks on social media?Sorry for the long winded ask. I hope you enjoy the holidays.

I’ll pass the note along.

Sticker Sheets in Constructed Formats

New 24 Jul 2022 Asked by tempus-vulpes 26 Comments

In constructed formats, will everyone playing technically have their own three randomized Sticker Sheets? Specifically the case I'm wondering about is an effect that let's a player use Sticker Sheet abilities that their opponent had built their deck around (e.g. Opposition Agent)?

It only matters if the opponent is playing cards that sticker in their deck, and if that is the case, they’ll have their sticker sheets. Remember, if you’re using their cards, you can only make them put their stickers on cards they own. By the way, if an opponent forces you to sticker your own card with another of your own cards, you get to physically place the sticker on your card.

Color Identity Decisions

Hey Mark! Are we seeing a shift from colour identity being primarily decided by flavour rather than mechanics? An example from Commander legends wsould be the Opposition Agent a black card flavour wise (being a spy for the Dimir guild) but a white/blue card mechanically (re: Aven mindcensor, Thada Adel, Acquisitor etc.). This is just one of many examples but I am curious to know if this is a design shift or just, for lack of a better term, "mistakes"

Color identity defines what is possible. An ability is primary, secondary and tertiary in various colors. Flavor can define which color, of those capable of the effect, might do it on any one card, but flavor won’t justify the use of something not allowed in a color. Also, a small tip for you. If you don’t understand why something is done, ask so you can get an understanding from the person who is more knowledgeable about the topic. It is better to accept that you don’t know why rather than assume it’s a mistake. It can cause the person you’re asking to see the question as an attack rather than an inquiry and thus might encourage them not to answer. In other words, how you ask a question can impede your ability to learn.

Appreciation for Rogue Creatures

New 28 Oct 2020 Asked by sythecks 36 Comments

Rogue is my favorite creature type and I think Opposition Agent from Commander Legends is my new favorite ever printed! Please send my thanks to whoever designed that card and I hope there are more amazing rogues to come in sets from next year :)

Most sets have Rogues.
