Character Motivations

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by salamileg 37 Comments

I just wanted to say I really like Thunder Junction and overall like the idea of "showcase sets" as you described in today's article. But for future sets like this I'd definitely prefer either more thought into why characters are there, or if thought was put into it, have that reasoning expressed to the players. Certain characters felt very out of place in the set largely because we know nothing about their motivations, with Olivia Voldaren probably being the biggest offender on that front. Even just a little bit of flavor text like in Ghired's case really helps!

The characters do have motivations. The stories explain many of them, but not all.

Olivia's Power Move

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 34 Comments

What was the point of the wedding with Olivia Voldaren? She gained power over innistrad just to abandon it?

I’m not sure I’d call what happened her “abandoning” it.

Predicting Future Character Cards

New 18 Nov 2021 Asked by j-waffles 70 Comments

Omnath and Niv Mizzet are the only characters to have 4 creature cards representing them, more than any other character. In the hypothetical where you don’t know what’s going to come out soon, who do you think is most likely to be the next character to join that club?

Do any other characters have four copies? And who has three? Off the top of my head - Olivia Voldaren, Crovax, Mirri, Rakdos? Who else?

Influence of Count Dracula on Sorin

New 01 Nov 2021 Asked by alexanderkrizak 63 Comments

As you've said before, Mark, Olivia Voldaren was designed as Innistrad's Count Dracula. But now Crimson Vow's Dracula-themed card have Sorin as Count Dracula and not Olivia. Who messed this up?

Sorin was also very influenced by Count Dracula.

Origin of Character Names

New 02 Feb 2021 Asked by vukotich 56 Comments

Hi, I'd like to know who comes up with the names for the characters in Magic: the Gathering please. For example, who invented the name Fblthp? Or Gonti? Or Olivia Voldaren? Is it something the team does together, or does the artist have input, or is there just one person? Many thanks.

Names of characters are most often the responsibility of the creative team. There’s an art to flavorfully naming characters.

Olivia Voldaren Trivia

Hello! It's my birthday today, and also my 1 year anniversary of playing Magic, since I got my first deck last year as a gift! Could I request a trivia fact about my favourite card/character, Olivia Voldaren, or one of the other Legendary vampires? (Or a hint on whether we'll be seeing Olivia again in the upcoming Innistrad set?) Thank you and also Happy Hanukkah!

Olivia was created as a top down Count Dracula. She, while still named Count Dracula, won our internal rare poll where we use employees to gauge how cool the rares and mythic rares are. This led to some discussion about how much the name, which the card wasn’t going to have, influenced the vote, and forced us to change our policy to give realistic names to cards before the rare poll.Happy Birthday!

Vampire House Lore

New 26 Oct 2019 Asked by jaymictheunyielding 49 Comments

In answer to the Edgar Markov question, the Falkenrath are the only Innistradian vampire house to lose their progenitor, hence Anje filling the void. Edgar Markov, Olivia Voldaren, and Runo Stromkirk each still lead their respective houses, as far as we know.

Good to know.

Appreciating Subtle Allusions

New 09 Sep 2019 Asked by vraskastentacles-blog 124 Comments

Just as a counterpoint to an earlier comment, I wanted to say that I very much appreciate when Magic does subtle allusions to things rather than heavy-handed direct references. I like the idea that the Magic multiverse is it's own thing.

I like that we have Olivia Voldaren and not Count Dracula.

Legendary Planeswalker Possibility

New 29 Sep 2017 Asked by jjustin2889-blog 33 Comments

What is the likelihood that a legendary character introduced in a set will get a planeswalker card during a return to that set or even appear randomly as a planeswalker on a world? I would love to see Olivia voldaren as a walker.

It’s not super likely, but it’s happened.

Legendary Creature Demands

New 28 Mar 2016 Asked by 3hip5me 40 Comments

"I’m getting more requests for second version of known legendary creatures than requests for characters we’ve heard of but don’t have a card yet." That makes sense. Most people who played during Innistrad at least vaguely remember Thalia or Olivia Voldaren. Only the people who follow the story in some capacity remember, say, Ludevic. I hope that doesn't mean you guys will forego cards representing unrepresented characters.

We plan on doing both. I was just trying to get people to understand that there was more demand for one than the other.

Hello MaRo. Today is my birthday (yay) and if you're not too busy preparing for the holidays, could I please have some trivia on Olivia Voldaren or vampires as a whole?

Olivia Voldaren was codenamed Count Dracula and won the internal rare poll we did to determine how much we think players like the rare and mythic rares. I designed the card trying to capture the trope of vampires choosing between feeding and turning their victims. I’m very happy with how the card turned out.Happy Birthday!

Hi! Tomorrow is my seventeenth birthday, so could you share some trivia about one of my favorite legendary creatures, Olivia Voldaren?

In design, Olivia Volaren was Count Dracula and she won the internal rare poll. Mark Gottlieb really wanted to change her but I liked the design (as it was mine) and refused to change it quoting the rare poll as evidence that it would be popular. Happy Birthday!

That card won our internal Rare poll and except for a few number tweaks was unchanged from when I designed it.

Olivia Voldaren Name

New 18 Jun 2015 Asked by nobthehobbit 22 Comments

Who came up with the name Olivia for Olivia Voldaren? It feels a bit out of place, being a name used in English when just about every other named character in Magic doesn't have that sort of name.

There are many names used on legendary creatures and planeswalkers that pre-exist their use in Magic

Olivia Voldaren Origins

I did. It was called Count Dracula in design and I was making a top down lord of the vampires. The creative team came up with the cool twist of making the character female.

Olivia Voldaren Trivia

Can I get some birthday trivia regarding my favorite character and card in Magic; Olivia Voldaren?

Olivia Voldaren was Count Dracula in design. We named all our tropes after the most famous version to make sure people got what we were going for. I was very proud of the design as the lord of the vampires got to choose between killing and turning creatures. The card won the internal rare poll we run to gauge first impressions. I got in a big fight with another designer who really wanted to change the card but I held firm because I liked the design. The creative team thought it would be cool to flip the gender and Olivia was born. Happy Birthday!
