Misthollow Griffin

Exile Zone Usage

New 26 Jan 2023 Asked by burninggiverwolf 31 Comments

Following on from your question about Misthollow Griffin, I remember you saying in the past that you are careful not to turn the exile zone into "graveyard #2". Is that still the case?

I’m trying my best.

Misthollow Griffin Philosophy

New 26 Jan 2023 Asked by admiralsmash-blog 36 Comments

Does Misthollow Griffin violate your philosophy that cards shouldn't leave exile except because of the card that exiled them in the first place?

I’m okay with a small number of cards that can get themselves back from exile if we’re careful not to push any of them. The big worry is being able bring back something from exile that wasn’t designed to come back.

You don't like cards returning things from exile they didn't put there as it turns exile just into a second graveyard. But you've stated you're okay with cards like Squee the Immortal and Misthollow Griffin that can bring themselves back from exile. Where do you fall on effects like the Buy a Box Athreos or Kaya's Ghostform? Does the immediacy of the return make it okay?

For all intents and purposes, it’s sending the card somewhere else instead of to exile, and I’m fine with that.

Adventures Mechanics

New 21 Sep 2019 Asked by khanshotfirst 50 Comments

Am I wrong in assuming that the Adventures are mechanically akin to the card 'Richard Garfield, PhD'? A Misthollow Griffin is only Misthollow Griffin in all zones, with the sole exception of when it's on the stack as Pull from the Deep.

Correct.

Exile Zone Concerns

What's wrong with Warden of the Beyond? I thought it was getting cards out of exile that was the problem (e.g. Misthollow Griffin and the processors)

I don’t have a problem with Warden from Beyond. My issue is that exiled cards are supposed to stay exiled. I don’t want the exile zone becoming a second graveyard.

Un-Rules of Booster Tutor

New 27 Jun 2015 Asked by nobthehobbit 42 Comments

Un-Rules question: If I open a pack with Booster Tutor, where do the unselected cards end up? Are they in exile (in case I get Misthollow Griffin or Torrent Elemental)? Can I Wish for them (say in a setting where I can't just Wish for any card I own)?

The rest of the pack goes into the absolutely-removed-from-the-freaking-game-forever zone. The same one used by AWOL.

Torrent Elemental Objections

New 29 May 2015 Asked by imawizaaard 37 Comments

You referred to Torrent Elemental as "slipping through." Do you think Torrent Elemental (and Misthollow Griffin, for that matter) should not have been printed? Would you have tried/ did you try to stop them?

I did try to stop both and failed each time.

Exile Zone Sanctity

New 10 Jan 2015 Asked by meandering-monotreme 31 Comments

If someone doesn't care about flavor but don't like the Misthollow Griffin ability because it "hurts the sanctity of the exile zone" are they a Vorthos or a Melvin?

Worrying about the sanctity of the exile zone is a Melvin quality as it’s a structural game issue and not a flavor one.

Griffin Deck Performance

New 16 Nov 2014 Asked by asw122 25 Comments

You say that misthollow griffin is low abuse, but a griffin deck is 10-1-1 in the legacy GP at the moment.

I meant low abuse in that the Misthollow Griffin can only get itself back. The real abuse is when you can get back any card you own that’s been exiled.

Exile Mechanic Opinion

You said things coming back from exiled isn't a thing. What about misthollow Griffin

No, what I said is, I don’t like spells bringing things back from exile that didn’t put them there. Thus, I was not happy we made Misthollow Griffin. I will note that as it can only get itself back, the exile abuse issues are low.

How do you feel about Misthollow Griffin? I know you don't like things that return from from exile but Misthollow Griffin only returns itself and is (currently at least) unique and awesome. Too much exile abuse? Or just right?

It at least only returns itself, but I worry whenever we stretch the boundary that it leads to other cards that stretch it more.

Exile's Design Space

New 03 Aug 2014 Asked by dudefromdenmark 20 Comments

I understand that Exiled stuff should stay exiled, but it just seems like a zone that have a lot of potential dont you think? Misthollow Griffen is for instance a really cool card

There is design space but I’m not interested in turning exile into a second graveyard. Also, the exile being a safety valve is important. Misthollow Griffin does get itself back from exile and not a card put there by other means.

Exile Mechanics

Why do you feel that things should not be brought back from exile? I personally feel that misthollow griffin had great flavour.

The point of exile was we mechanically needed a place of getting rid of things that were then gone permanently. If you can get things back from exile it just becomes a second graveyard and we don’t need one of those.

Does it bother you that pinocchio comes back from exile after being swallowed by the whale? It's basically misthollow griffin!

I don’t mind if the card that exiles it brings it back. Cards are allowed to use the exile zone as a hiatus. What I don’t like is cards that bring cards back from exile that another card put there.

Plans for Exile Zone

New 07 Oct 2013 Asked by orewafiripin-jindesu 10 Comments

do you have plans making more cards that revolves around exile such as misthollow griffin?

Do I? No. I think the exile zone should be left alone. Well, more precise, I want to stop bringing back things from the Edie zone that were put there by other cards.

Exiling Cards Opinions

New 20 Mar 2013 Asked by 4lungboy-deactivated20140501 2 Comments

Adding on to the Pull from Eternity question, do you feel the same way about Misthollow Griffin, a creature that can be cast from exile?

Misthollow Griffin is a little better in that it can only affect itself. I’m not a fan but I dislike Misthollow Griffin less than I dislike Pull from Eternity.

Against Exile Zone Retrieval

New 26 Nov 2012 Asked by throatwolfe 6 Comments

You have previously stated that you fought against Misthollow Griffin. Did you also fight against Pull from Eternity? It can move any card from the exile zone to the graveyard.

I fight against any card that gets things back from the exile zone so yes, I fought against Pull from Eternity. Note that Wishes originally (and currently) do not get things from the exile zone so I did not fight against them.

Exile Zone Gameplay

For misthallow griffen, what made R&D believe it was ok to play with the exile zone?

There is great attraction to playing in areas you haven’t played before. I tried to stop Misthollow Griffin but was unsuccessful.

You've said you don't like the ability to bring things back from exile. Why make cards like Misthollow Griffin or Mystic Retrieval, that being the case.

Big secret. I don’t make all the cards. Nor am I the final say if we print them. Okay, that’s two big secrets.

Misthollow Griffin Concerns

New 13 May 2012 Asked by extremeconsiderationthemovie 2 Comments

I thought you would dislike Misthollow Griffin because it cast from exile, not because it comes back from exile. hence why id presume you dont mind blinking and O-Ring and Helvault.

I don’t like that it comes back from exile when it was sent there by cards that you’re not supposed to come back from. Cards that use the exile zone as a limbo don’t bother me at all. (In fact, I’m a fan of many of them especially cards that flicker.)
