Mana Flair

Titling Non-acorn Cards

New 10 Feb 2022 Asked by mikecarlucci 33 Comments

Hi Mark! Would Factor Fiction be too silly/confusing of a name for black border/non-acorn Magic?

Only the only time we’ve done a homonym (the name sounds the same, but is spelled differently) on purpose was in Unhinged’s Mana Flair (which I think is Magic’s only haiku flavor text), so I’m skeptical we’d do it outside of an Un-set and probably even then only on an acorn card.

Card name homophones

How likely are card name homophones? Are there any already?

Unhinged had Mana Flair, which is a homophone of the Alpha card Mana Flare.

I take it you're also responsible for the card(s) with limerick flavor text?

Mana Flair is mine. Is there another?

Naming Constraints

Will we ever see a card named "Soul Ring" or does the existence of Sol Ring prevent a similar sounding named card from being printed? And have there been any cards that have been renamed for a similar reason?

Unhinged had a card called Mana Flair (a homophone of Manaflare), but I’m not sure we’d do that in black border.

Homophones in Card Names

So capitalization and (probably) punctuation are out for differentiating card names. What about homophones? Could you make a card named Encyst, or does the existence of Insist prevent that?

Unhinged had Mana Flair (in contrast with Mana Flare) so homonyms are allowable, although probably frowned upon in black border.

Birthday and Mana Flare

New 17 Feb 2016 Asked by dgbrown42 28 Comments

Mark - yesterday was my birthday, and it made me think back on my Magic-themed birthday party in 7th grade -- way back in 1995. Got any trivia on that year, or my favorite card at the time, Mana Flare? Thanks!

Mana Flare has a homonym card twin, one that has a name the sounds the same - Mana Flair from Unhinged. Happy Birthday!

Haiku Card Challenge

Can you think of a way to make a card where the design is a 5-7-5 haiku with proper Magic templating? I've come close, but can't quite get it to fit.

I wrote haiku flavor text for an Unhinged card - Mana Flair.

Card Name Uniqueness

Can silver-bordered cards have the same name but different rules text?

No. The rules allow you to play any Magic card with that name. Unhinged did have Mana Flair which is a homonym of Manaflare.

Card Name Homophones

Does there exist a pair of cards whose English names are homophones?

Yes. Unhinged made a card called Mana Flair which was purposefully a homophone of the famous Magic Alpha card Manaflare.

Would it be considered to print 2 cards with names that are spoken the same way but spelled different? Like Soul Wring instead of Sol Ring.

Unhinged made Mana Flair so obviously it’s possible on a printed card. I’m not sure if we’d do it in black border though.

Card Name Similarities

If, somehow, a set came along where a card called 'Chained to the Rhox' would be a reasonable thing, would there being a card whose name sounds the same in English prevent it from being called that?

Unhinged had a card called Mana Flair and Alpha has a card called Manaflare. That’s silver border so I’m not sure if we’d do it in black border but we have done it before.

Card Naming Policy

Would you be allowed to print a card named "Stone Reign"?

Unhinged has a card called Mana Flair so homophones are technically possible, maybe only in silver border.
