Lux Cannon

Nahiri Trivia

Hi Mark! Almost missed my birthday window but could I ask for trivia about the new incarnation my favorite planeswalker, Nahiri? Failing that, do you have any trivia on the design of the card Lux Cannon? Thanks!

When we originally created the Eldrazi, we had a story about three planeswalkers, Ugin, Sorin, and a planeswalker just called The Lithomancer. We eventually figured out who we wanted her to be and made her a planeswalker card.Happy Birthday!

Lux Cannon Evaluation

What are your thoughts on Lux Cannon? I know you have before said that 7 mana is a hard limit on a colorless destroy target permanent, but it might be different because of the additional cost.

Lux Cannon is only 4 mana but it also requires an additional resource of time.

Finally my birthday. Would you happen to have any trivia on either of my two favorite cards? Lux Cannon and Humility.

Lux Cannon’s design name was Killing Machine. Happy Birthday!

Card Mechanics Distinctions

I just listened to your SOM DTW #3, and I'm curious where you draw the line between cards like Liquimetal Coating (which you said allowed Red to deal with enchantments too easily) and cards like Lux Cannon. You seem to have great enthusiasm for the latter, and hold the former in disdain, but they all seem to be similar to me.

I am okay with artifacts doing some things the colors cannot as long as it requires some actual investment. Lux Cannon has to be cast and then four turns later you are able to use it. Liquid Metal Coating is too quick and easy to circumvent red’s weakness.

Favorite Playtest Names

What are some of your favorite/most memorable playtest names of all time?

While I know there have been countless design names I’ve really loved, it’s hard to actually think of them when someone asks you directly. My most recent favorite was from Scars of Mirrodin. The card Clone Shell was called Meat Puppet in playtest and to this day I still refer to the card by its design name. Another Scars card that I refer to by its playtest name is Killing Machine, a card you all might know as Lux Cannon.
