Kavu Titan

Handling Variable Costs

New 07 Mar 2023 Asked by sjtsquid 49 Comments

A question about set design & codes, but how do you handle cards with alternative/additional costs? An example of this is Kavu Titan that can be a 2/2 for 1G, or a 5/5 trample for 3GG. Does it fill a 2-drop slot, a 5-drop slot, or half of each?

It counts half and half.

Kavu Titan Playtest Story

Perhaps you could tell the story of your playtest win rate when you discovered that Kavu Titan had kicker?

I’ve told this story many times, but for the newcomers. Many years ago, when the FFL (the Future Future League, the R&D testing of future environments) first started, I was asked to play in it. I said I wasn’t a good enough deck builder, so they said I would be given decks. The first deck I got was red/green and built by Randy Buehler. I went 4-0. After my last game Randy pointed out that the Grizzly Bears in the deck were actually supposed to be played as Kavu Titans (1G 2/2 that can be kicked to be a 3GG 5/5 trampler.) The next week I went 2-2. It taught me an important lesson about the importance of maximizing cards by playing then when you’re able.

Playtest Lessons

Hey Mark, long time drive to work listener and 2nd time blogatogger here. Congrats on all the great work on DOM~ it's actually my anniversary of playing MTG as well. Now, on a podcast you talked about how you were playtesting a bear and performing really well but the playtest lead forgot to tell you that you could cast the bear as a 5 cmc 5/5. knowing that you actually played worse but you had a great lesson that episode about optimal choices. Is Untamed Kavu the card design from that story?

That story is about Kavu Titan from Invasion.

Kavu and Beasts

Hey MaRo! Today it's my birthday and it seems you tend awnser trivia questions when it's someone's birthday (started following you only recently and it's my first question). Can you give me any trivia on my favorite creature type when I was a child the Kavu? Also, why is the creature type "Beast" slowly dissapearing? (The 8 y/o player in me cries everytime I see less and less beasts on newer sets). Thanks in advance!

Kavus are a race, so far, exclusive to Dominaria. I don’t remember the reasons behind us making them. They became popular because they appeared on a couple tournament cards (Flametongue Kavu and Kavu Titan spring to mind). We are not trying to do away with the Beast creature type. It’s just something we use when we don’t have something more specific and lately we have more specific options. Beasts aren’t going away. Happy Birthday!

TV Tropes Mention

Are you aware you're on TV Tropes? Your Kavu Titan play test story is on the "Too Awesome to Use" page.

I didn’t know that particular story was. I do know that “Tales from the Pit” has its own TV Tropes page.
