Animate Copy Logic

New 29 Mar 2024 Asked by mgmegadog 18 Comments

You've said before that copying the creature Animate Library is attached to gives you a non-creature empty library. Presumably, the same is true if you target the creature Animate Graveyard is attached to (giving you a non-creature empty graveyard). So, does that mean if I use It Came From Planet Glurg to copy an animated library and an animated graveyard, I can get a non-creature empty library-graveyard?

No.

Rules Vs. Card Ideas

New 12 Mar 2024 Asked by krarkrosewater 49 Comments

Hi mark thanks so much for your blog.It must happen sometimes you work on a mechanic or card that everyone understands how its supposed to work and its clear what that card wants to do but the rules of the game cant technically allow for it to work. Can you share an example of something that seems simple but has never been done because of a rules issue?

The best example would be to look at the acorn cards of Unfinity. While a few we’re kept acorn for Legacy concerns, the vast majority of acorn cards simple don’t work in the rules. Here are some I get asked about all the time: Claire D'Loon, Joy SculptorFar OutGoblin BlastronautsGrand Marshall MacieHow Is This a Par Three? It Came from Planet GlurgLila, Hospitality HostessSolaflora, Intergalactic IconSole PerformerTrigger HappyTruss, Chief Engineer

Seasonal Sequels Mechanics

New 11 Jan 2024 Asked by caretftu 26 Comments

When you cast the holiday card Seasonal Sequels, does the card you target have to be the subject/base of the sequels you pitch? For example, if you target It Came From Planet Glurg, do you need to come up with something like "The Glurg That Stole Christmas," or can it be just any holiday MTG themed pitch unrelated to the target?

Yes, they have to be about that spell, and also holiday-themed. Note, they can be about any holiday, but what holiday needs to be clear.

I just wanted to say I really liked the reference to Tikki Tikki Tembo when talking about Stefan (or It Came from Planet Glurg) falling down the well in yesterdays podcast.

I’m glad. : )

Planet Glurg Inspiration

New 18 Oct 2022 Asked by mraptronym 29 Comments

Can I get any info about It Came from Planet Glurg? I really love the design!

It was inspired by the popularity of Grusilda, Monster Masher. It was a different way to make a creature be a combination of multiple creatures.

Acorn Category Criteria

Do you know what exactly makes It Came from Planet Glurg and Grusilda, Monster-Masher Acorn, while mutate is not? Or is that out of your area as not-in-rules-department?

With mutate, we could be careful what cards had mutate to make sure we weren’t stepping into areas that cause the rules problems. Also, mutate itself skates dangerously close to the line.

Grusilda Design Status

Hi Mark,It was my birthday last week so I am asking delayed:Would Grusilda, Monster-Masher be black-borderifiable, or is she consigned to Acorndom? She is my favorite BR card (followed closely by Baron von Count!)

She is firmly in acorn space much like It Came from Planet Glurg inspired by her.

Creature Combination Hopes

New 27 Sep 2022 Asked by pantshkek 48 Comments

I’m disappointed to see that it came from planet Glurg is acorn. I was hoping that with merged permanents as part of the rules, we might get some proper creature combination

I was hoping it would work in the rules, but it didn’t. Trust me, if it could be eternal, I’d want it to be.
