Hellkite Tyrant

Red's Steal Ability

One last question, why does red barely get any time-indefinite steal artifact spells when it's one of the colors associated with rogues, pirates and other thieving scoundrel types? Something like a colorshifted Steal Artifact would've been perfectly in line with red (and Hellkite Tyrant already proves it, but he's very lonely in the color), since it's functionally "artifact removal with a little extra".

One of the ways we separate blue stealing from red stealing is that blue’s stealing is permanent while red’s stealing is temporary.

Did you design Skithiryx, Ojutai, Hellkite Tyrant or Steel Hellkite?

Yes, no, no, no.

Red's Image Evolution

I have something positive to say about the color pie. As someone who plays a lot of commander and loves red, I've seen a push in changing the color's image beyond simply "burn stuff, keep attacking." Now it has more temporary cloning, more interaction with artifacts (especially Kurkesh and Hellkite Tyrant), spell stealing (Mindclaw Shaman), draws more cards and has enjoyed a big increase in its spell-copying effects. It's more diverse, has a better late game and still feels "red." Keep it up.

Will do.

Hellkite Tyrant's Red Strategy

As a player who believes red should do more with artifacts than blow them up, I love Hellkite Tyrant. I have to ask, though, does it bother you? It is a red card that allows non-temporary thievery and encourages a red deck to embrace a strategy I'm not sure you would consider red. It's not even in an artifact-heavy set.

Dragons like to steal artifacts. It’s flavor we’ve mechanically played around with before.  I don’t mind red have some flavor with artifacts. I just want it to be different than blue’s identity with them. Dragon hoarding artifacts feels very red.
