Heartless Hidetsugu

Player Motivations

Hi Mark! My favorite deck is a commander with no ways or intentions to win but full of big mad cards that change the rules of the game, make the other players go mad, create chaos on the board, etc. What type of mtg player am I (I also have a lovely Heartless Hidetsugu commander and I generally really hate seeing too many creatures on the board)?

It depends on your motivation to do that. Because you like how it makes you feel? You’re a Timmy/Tammy. Because it reflects something about who you are? You’re a Johnny/JennyBecause you wanted to prove that you could do it well? You’re a Spike.

Acorn rules question: with Urza's Hot Tub, can you discard Heartless Hidetsugu to search for Hidetsugu's Second Rite?

No, the word has to be exactly the same.

Conspiracy Prerelease Luck

New 07 Jun 2014 Asked by chewie-shank-mtg 50 Comments

I just had the conspiracy prerelease and I got really lucky. I first picked a heartless hidetsugu and second picked a fact or fiction so I decided to go blue red. I then opened (and first picked) a dack fayden in the second pack and second picked a lore seeker. I got innistrad, and opened three rares (skirsdag high priest, ludevic's test subject, and a foil gavony township, so I used an agent of acquisitions I got in the first pack to draft the whole pack. Conspiracy is great :)

Sounds like you had a great time (and lots of luck).

Heartless Hidetsugu Design

Who designed Heartless Hidetsugu? If you know, can I get it signed by both you and the designer?(if it's not you)

My best guess is that card was designed by the set’s lead designer, Mike Elliott. He doesn’t work at Wizards anymore so it would be hard for me to get his autograph. As always, I’d be happy to sign it.

Red Strategy Restrictions

New 26 May 2012 Asked by sansafro187-blog 8 Comments

Why is Red the only color to which you apply such harsh strategic restrictions? All the other colors have the tools to play both the short and the long game. I know you aren't an EDH guy, but consider asking your coworkers to build non-gimmick(i.e. no Heartless Hidetsugu nonsense) mono decks in each color, and then play a game with them using the Red deck. Ask yourself how much fun you're having as you get left in the rearview, and whether it's worth sacrificing fun to philosophy there.

People seem to think that I’m saying red can only be an aggro color. Red does have midrange and control cards. My issue is not that red cannot hit other strategies. It just has to do them in a red way. Here’s an example. For years people were begging for more ways for green to deal with creatures. We finally found fight which allows green to deal with creatures with its own creatures, a solution that works in a green way. The trick to helping round out red is finding ways to do things red needs for the formats it’s having problems in ways that work in red. Work within the boundaries - don’t create new ones.
