Golgari Longlegs

Mana Cost Naming Prefence

Piggybacking off the Mana cost question from earlier, do you prefer to refer to a manacost of say Golgari Longlegs as "Three green black hybrid green black hybrid" or "three Golgari Golgari"? The second option seems far less wordy to me

I would say “three hybrid hybrid - black/green”.

Hybrid Rules Analysis

Hi Mark. Regarding the issue of hybrid in commander. I feel like the problem is misconstrued. The reason that its an and instead of an or is not about the casting but its state on the battlefield. For example if you play a golgari longlegs it doesn't matter if you pay with all green mana, your opponent can't doom blade it because its black. Unless hybrid changes in such a way that it isn't the case then the deck building rule should stay as is.

Here’s the problem. You make the decision at deck construction so it’s thought of in that regard not as a color on the battlefield issue. If I have a monoblack deck in any format other than Commander/Brawl (and I mean literally every other Magic formats - and there are a lot), you can play your black hybrid card. But let’s examine, the color on the battlefield argument. Does the Commander rules keep you from having permanents on the battlefield that are a color not in your color identity? No, it doesn’t. There are numerous cards that are additional colors or change colors. There are lots of cards that make tokens of a different color than itself. As long as those cards don’t have a mana symbol of another color, you’re free to play them. So trying to justify the hybrid rule with that doesn’t work because it’s not consistent with how the color identity rules work with cards of other colors. That’s my whole point. Rules for what a format allows want consistency (and also intuitiveness, although I’d argue that is very tied to consistency), and the hybrid rules fail badly in the consistency department. As a game designer who cares a great deal about games being consistent and intuitive, it rubs me the wrong way. The better argument path to pursue, by the way, is why it needs to be inconsistent not that it isn’t inconsistent.

Here's some interesting trivia: Golgari Longlegs is the only enemy colored vanilla creature that has ever been printed.

That is interesting.
