Fabled Passage

Shuffling Impact on Standard

New 30 Aug 2020 Asked by lbolt187 35 Comments

Regarding fetch lands in standard if shuffling is such an issue why ever reprint evolving wilds, or Fabled Passage? I feel like regardless of duals or not most tournament decks would run them regardless thus still having the shuffling issue.

There’s a difference between decks running four copies of one shuffling card and multiple copies. Perhaps even one shuffling card is too high, but we’re testing having a little.

Reason Behind No Fetchlands

New 29 Aug 2020 Asked by reamaday 73 Comments

What is the playability reasoning behind not wanting fetchlands in standard? I had heard previously that it was because of slow play patterns in having to fetch out cards then shuffling, but that doesn't seem to jive with the printing of fabled passage, which is essentially the exact same play pattern. In a standard without lands that can be abused too hard to make standard mana too easy, is there another factor that comes in to why fetches aren't ideal for standard?

I feel like I answer this question about once a month. First, fetches make getting colors too easy. Second, their power level is higher than we want for duals in Standard. Third, we have a low threshold for shuffling in Standard. That means we get a few cards, but not a whole cycle.

Fabled Passage vs. Other Fetches

RE: Fabled Passage, it seems to me that it has the same problems that the other fetches have, it shuffles repeatedly and fixes mana really easily. Is it really just quantity that's the issue?

It can only fetch basic lands.

Fabled Passage in Standard Format

If you guys don't want fetches in a standard product, why did Fabled Passage get printed twice in the same standard format, then?

We don’t want those particular fetch lands in Standard. It’s okay to have an occasional land that fetches lands, although we don’t want much more than one or two in Standard.

Is Fabled Passage the fastest rare reprint ever?

I don’t think so.

Praise for Fabled Passage

I just wanted to share my appreciation for Fabled Passage being reprinted already in M21. I love this and hope it continues with cards like this that almost everyone needs. Please high five those responsible for me please.

Highs shall be fived.

Fabled Passage vs Enemy Fetchlands

New 28 Apr 2020 Asked by lookingupanddown 57 Comments

RE Fabled Passage vs enemy fetchlands: Fabled Passage can only get basic lands. Enemy fetches can grab anything with a basic land subtype, leading to other problems with nonbasics with basic land subtypes.

A fine point.

Scalding Tarn vs Fabled Passage

New 28 Apr 2020 Asked by charjazznable 41 Comments

"Why is Scalding Tarn more problematic for Standard than Fabled Passage? Because it’s part of a cycle making the as-fan five times higher than Fabled Passage" but scalding tarn will show up just as often as fabled passage, despite only being relevant to decks in its colors, while roughly 5x more decks want fabled passage. doesn't as-fan work against fabled passage here?

It’s Fabled Passage vs. the entire five card cycle of enemy fetches.

Land Color Representation

New 16 Nov 2019 Asked by hejemony 62 Comments

hi mark. do you happen to know why recent five colour fetch-esque lands prismatic vista and fabled passage are gold while evolving wilds is grey? does this represent a change to how lands are coloured or am i missing a variable? thanks!

No, it’s a change. We like lands to give you a hint what color they give you access to. Gold does a better job of visually conveying any color.

Fetchlands in Pioneer

New 26 Oct 2019 Asked by itsgadang 49 Comments

Hello Mark, can you explain why the fetchlands that are banned in pioneer considered problematic even in an envoirement where they can only get monocolored lands but "basic-fetchlands" like evolving wilds and fabled passage are okay? They both have the same shuffling problem.

There is a shuffling threshold. We think a little is okay, but fetchlands (plus basic land types on dual lands which exist in Pioneer) tend to encourage playing a whole bunch of fetchlands.

Fabled Passage Design

New 25 Sep 2019 Asked by kandykidzero 54 Comments

Is there a reason why "Fabled Passage" doesn't look for basic land types? It would have been more flavorful to be able to look for the specific locales like "Gingerbread Cabin" and "Dwarven Mine" or even "Mistveil Plains" in older sets. My guess is there may have been a concern for older formats gaining access to a painless fetchland, thus driving up the demand for a specific rare out of the gates.

Basic land is a play design decision to limit shenanigans.

Standard Fetch Lands

New 19 Sep 2019 Asked by cutiemarkmlp 41 Comments

Mark, you've suggested in the past that fetchlands (and search features in general) are not ideal for standard. Does the printing of Fabled Passage suggest a change to this? Could you see "fetch lands" like Windswept Heath or Scalding Tarn in standard?

Most years have one “search for a basic land” land. That’s about our threshold.
