Creature Type Harmony

New 06 Jan 2024 Asked by bostonpizza14 40 Comments

Will we ever see a consolidation of creature types? We have a few examples that encompass the same theme (devil/tiefling/imp for example) that seem to only hinder players trying to keep to a certain tribe.

It’s the age old conflict of Vorthos vs. Mel. Vorthos likes lots of variety, and Mel wants everything consolidated.

The Un-Resources (askurza, etc) does not load for me except for the Devil K. Nevil video. Could you please inform the appropriate people about this issue? Thanks.

Will do.

Black Enchantment Removal

New 25 Aug 2023 Asked by interrogatemarcusii 30 Comments

With Baragain and Shatter the Oath in mind, is getting rid of your own (potentially harmful) enchantments now within Black's slice of the color pie?

We are allowing black access to this. It turns out we just don’t make many “deal with the devil” enchantments these days, and sacrifice is a big theme for black, especially in limited formats.

Sacrificing Enchantments Effect

New 17 Aug 2023 Asked by wulframofthedas 26 Comments

Does sacrificing enchantments being allowed make "deal with the devil" type effects less likely to be made?

We’re already making them very infrequently. It’s part of what allowed the change.

Enchantment Sacrifice

New 17 Aug 2023 Asked by featheredsnek 40 Comments

Could you describe the back and forth on letting black sacrifice enchantments? Either that or a drive to work or an article, it seems fascinating!

It’s not really a 30 minutes story. We used to not allow it to allow us to make “deal with the Devil” enchantments. We found we made very few in recent years, so we decided to let black start sacrificing enchantments.

Devil K Nevil Rules

New 27 Nov 2022 Asked by oworaviolitime 26 Comments

Follow up on my previous question about holding items while launching Devil K Nevil, you can't place objects behind your hand to add weight to it, right? I assume this falls under the same idea of not holding items in your hand, but I know some people who are pedantic about this stuff.

Yes. You are only allowed to use your hand with no aid from other objects.

Devil K Nevil Strategy

New 27 Nov 2022 Asked by oworaviolitime 20 Comments

When launching Devil K Nevil, are you allowed to hold objects in your hand, so long as that object in no way makes contact with the card? A friend suggested that you could hold a roll of coins in your hand and punch the card to make it go further and I wasn't sure if that was legal.

You may not have anything in your hand.

Unfinity Draft Joy

New 31 Oct 2022 Asked by decynicalrevolt 38 Comments

I just wanna say how awesome your Unfinity draft is. I got the pleasure of flipping Devil k. Nevil over 10 creatures and onto the next table over in the same game where my Beebled Six-sided Die rolled double 1s, and my opponent achieved the first 8 hats. Thank you for the wonderful night.

Happy to hear you enjoyed it.

Unfinity Set Praise

New 12 Oct 2022 Asked by moonsliceman 23 Comments

Played some Unfinity twice the last few days. Absolutely blown away by how fun the set is, and I was following the spoilers! Even my friends who weren't playing the game had fun with all the "Hey dude, you're great, just stay sitting *right there*" "No no, isn't the couch downstairs comfortable?" going on with Gobsmacked, along with the other outside the game cards. As soon as my friends understood what I was doing with Head in the Game, they took a smoke break while I sat there with my head on the battlefield. Devil K Nevil went into the next room over during a practice run. Great times! Our only small issue was the stickers; fun as can be on the first application, but ours wouldn't go back on the sheet. The Attractions more than made up for it, as they were way, way more fun than I had anticipated. Please distribute some big high fives from us! 10/10 set again, what a year this has been!

Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

Unfinity Rules Queries

New 08 Oct 2022 Asked by scarlettstrings 18 Comments

Hey Mark! We had a blast last night playing with our Unfinity commander decks, really love the set :D We had a couple eules questions come up, which might be important in future games. Does Devil K. Nevil have to stay on the table for his jump to be successful? And the other is with Surprise Party, do you have to hide the tokens under things already on the battlefield or can you sneak them into sleeves of cards in your hand before you play the cards as long as you aren't caught?

Devil K. Nevil has to clear the line of creatures, but doesn’t have to land on the table, although he gets style points for it. You can’t hide the Robots in things before you play them. You have to hide them after things are on the battlefield.

Pop Culture Reference

A Magic the Gathering pop culture reference that's 25 years old today, in the Mystery Science Theatre episode where they watch the movie Devil Doll. When they are watching the movie one of the characters says "come" and the riff is "Let’s play Magic: The Gathering."

Devil K. Nevil's Jump

New 03 Oct 2022 Asked by scarlettstrings 15 Comments

Hey Mark! Super excited for Unfinity :D I'm building a couple commander decks to take to my LGS for fun times. I had a question about Devil K. Nevil, does the kind of table matter for his jump? Our LGS uses a lot of tables with raised sides for games/dnd so was curious if that affects his jump too much 🤔 Thanks in advance and can't wait for Friday!!

Devil K. Nevil and the line of creatures he’s jumping over have you be on the same level.

Sticker Sheet Wording

New 28 Sep 2022 Asked by suigenyukiouji 27 Comments

I noticed the Sticky Kavu Daredevil sticker sheet has the wording "When this permanent dies, ..." Is this going to become standard wording for all permanents going from the battlefield to the graveyard? It would really help save a lot of space on a lot of cards, even if the flavor hits slightly wrong.

No, “dies” is still being used for creatures. The sticker is mostly going to be used on creatures and we had space issues.

The latter.

Playtest Soundtrack Suggestion

Did you used music to add some drama to your playtests? I can't imagine playing Devil K. Nevill without a proper soundtrack.

I wholeheartedly support entrance music for Devil K. Nevil.

Devil K. Nevil Jump

New 22 Sep 2022 Asked by mumonrift-blog 36 Comments

How should I jump Devil K. Nevil if I am playing on the floor due to Enter the Dungeon or just not playing at a table?

You may use the top of the table just for the jump if there’s no way to do it under the table.

Devil K Nevil Rule

New 22 Sep 2022 Asked by lykrast 14 Comments

If I play Devil K Nevil can I use an equal number of empty sleeves for the jump instead of moving all creatures on the board?

You need to use Magic cards, but they can be ones you’re not playing with. You just can’t jump over more cards than there are creatures on the battlefield.

Devil K Nevil Mechanics

Devil K Nevil rules question: can I use my hand (of magic cards) to launch him?

No. You have to use your hand with fingers.

Uncard Physical Actions

New 21 Sep 2022 Asked by sandsbuisle 42 Comments

If an Uncard says "you do X", can I entreat someone else to do it for me? Like a friend who practiced having devil K Nevil do sick flips?

There’s a rule that if you are physically incapable of performing a physical action, you can get a substitute to do it, but it’s because you are unable to do it, not because you just don’t want to.

Enchantment Balancing Act

New 20 Aug 2022 Asked by armeizh 33 Comments

Hi Mark, was there a specific reason you weren't making that many "deal with the devil" enchantments anymore? Were they that unpopular, or too hard to balance to make non-casual play want them, for example?

They’re hard to make playable.
