Cast Out

Standard Playables

I'm fine with high valued promos like Path, Visions, and even Fatal Push not being FNM promos. But I don't think if Lord of the Accursed, Cast Out, or Vizier of Remedies had been made FNM promos that they would have made FNM much more competitive when the events already off prize packs. I'm honestly curious though, does your data show that when less valuable promos were offered at FNM the events had a notable decrease in competitive players/atmosphere and notable increase in more casual players?

The problem is that we want the promos playable in Standard so we have to guess on how powerful the card is going to end up being as they aren’t out yet.

Design Philosophy

Mark, in your podcast of urza block (and outside of it) you say that expunge is a bad card design because having cycling on a card you want all the time is wasted text. However, in amonket the card "cast out" fill exactly the same hole, perhaps more so because it is unconditional. Is this a change in philosophy or just development muddling things again?

The two cards are different in numerous ways so it’s not a great comparison. The biggest difference is the separation between mana cost and cycling cost.

Praise for Amonkhet Design

I just wanted my voice heard. Thank you and the design/development team for putting great cards such as Censor, Pull from Tomorrow, Cast Out, and others like these in Amonkhet. Control players like myself have been felt like we've been pushed aside for years since Sphinx's Revelation rotated out, and I must say limited and constructed both feel awesome right now. Great job Mark.

I’ll pass along your kind words to those responsible.

Re: Cast Out. Still annoyed that it's not templated like Oblivion Ring. Bring back dumb tricks like that!

We’re trying to avoid things that feel nonintuitive (aka feel like you’re cheating to less experienced players).

Color Pie Philosophy

Also this isn't a question and doesn't require an answer but I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. I can't thank you in the questions themselves, what with this thrice-damned character limit. I'm an undergrad studying philosophy and I find the color pie stuff extremely interesting-- I earnestly look forward to the day when the idea of Blue as the color of intelligence is cast out as an antiquated relic, along with the notion of Black vs. White as Evil vs. Good.

You are correct that every color has intelligent aspects. Blue is though the color that values knowledge.
