Wyluli Wolf

Rare-Be-Gone Dynamics

New 12 Sep 2017 Asked by gnomepolean 53 Comments

Two quick questions: does rare business gone work on mythics, cards that lost their rare status in iconic master? And if not can I get a maybe on mythic begone?

Rare-Be-Gone destroys all rares and mythic rares. As with all silver bordered cards, qualities of cards are defined by the attributes of that particular card. For instance, Wyluli Wolf has been printed both at common (Arabian Nights) and at rare (Fifth Edition). If both were on the battlefield and you cast Rate-Be-Gone, the rare Fifth Edition version would be destroyed while the common Arabian Nights version wouldn’t be destroyed.

Rarity Increase Examples

What card has seen the biggest jump in rarity during a reprint?

There are numerous Arabian Nights reprints that went from common to rare (Rukh Egg and Wyluli Wolf are the ones that comes to mind.)

City in a Bottle

"We don’t want one printing of Wyluli Wolf to get affected while another one doesn’t." Why is City in a Bottle not banned, then? It would seem ideal to put it in the same category as Ante and physical dexterity cards.

City in a  Bottle is banned for this exact reason. We don’t make cards like City in a Bottle anymore. Well, outside silver-border.

Rarity Reference

You said recently that Watermarks cannot be referenced by cards. Can rarity? For example: "This has Protection from Uncommon"

Black-bordered cards cannot reference rarity for the same reason that they cannot reference watermarks - there exist cards with the same name but different in regard to this category. For example, Wyluli Wolf has been printed both as a common and a rare. WE don’t want one printing of Wyluli Wolf to get affected while another one doesn’t. Now, silver-bordered cards don’t have this problem which is why cards like Rare-Be-Gone exist.

Explaining Banding

Ok, I was telling my group about making tribal wolves, just for giggles. And the topic of banding popped up. I read the oracle text for banding, and it still really didn't make sense. How was banding received by players, and do you think it is an idea that could be reworked into something? Also, can you explain banding in lame man's terms? Tribal Wolves thank you... and I might even squak Wyluli wolf in there... only because I know how to pronounce it... and that's all because of you MaRO.

Very few players (and I mean very few players) understood banding. That’s the major reason we did away with it.
