Withering Boon Reprint

May I request a withering boon reprint into standard/pioneer?

No, black countering a spell is a color pie break. Black gets rid of troublesome creature cards in the opponent’s hand by forcing them to discard them.

Absence of New Black Counterspells

There seem to be a decent number of old black counterspells. They weren’t necessarily good, but they were there. However, there don’t seem to be any newer black counterspells, the most recent one being Dash Hopes from Planar Chaos. Why’s that? What changed?

There are only two. Withering Boon is from the very early years of Magic (Mirage). Dash Hopes is a punisher card from the set messing with the color pie. I don’t believe counterspells were ever part of black’s color pie since we started monitoring it.

Black Spell Counter

“Could black get a spell that counters a creature spell? It can already destroy creatures and force you to discard them” Withering Boon is very sad to be forgotten

There are a lot of cards in Magic’s history that probably shouldn’t have been made, and definitely aren’t precedent.

Monoblack Counter Possibility

Will we ever get a revisit of the monoblack "counter target creature spell" concept (like Withering Boon)?

I never say never but it’s a low percentage possibility.

Modern Reprints Constraints

¿Are Illumination and Withering Boon cards that could be reprinted in modern Magic?

No. White in theory can do taxing or Memory Lapse-ish counterspells.

Black Counterspells

Doesn't Black have a counterspell? it's called dash hopes.

Dash Hopes was both from Planar Chaos (the set that messed with the color pie) and a “punisher” spell meaning the opponent had a choice between which effect the spell generated. Black did have a counterspell called Withering Boon in Mirage.

Countermagic Distribution

You asked why people want countermagic spread across more colors even though many players get annoyed of it if there's too much of it. I ask why the two has to be opposed? To let other colours have some kinds of countermagic, even if a bit bad and far apart, would help leviate the grip that blue has of constructed magic. There has historically been connections with other colours and aspects of countermagic with cards such as bind, molten influence, withering boon and illumination

I believe blue’s historical dominance has more to do with blue’s access to card drawing than it does to counterspells. While many people have been pitching the idea that players would dislike counterspells less if they had access to them, I’m still a little dubious.

White Counterspell Philosophy

Regarding White Counterspells, I seem to recall Aaron mentioning (around PT: Amsterdam, where Paul Rietzl's deck featured both Mana Tithe and Lapse of Certainty) that they were backing off of them due to how easily they created a white "Fish" deck, due to White's strong weenie creatures. Has this attitude changed internally? There hasn't been a white counterspell printed since Shards. (On a related note: Any chance of seeing a "Withering Boon"-type C-spell in black again?)

Yeah, Aaron’s issue is an important one. White, thematically and philosophically, wants certain types of counterspells (especially delaying and taxing) but mechanically it gives some tools to white that cause problems.  My waxing about the color of Memory Lapse was more a philosophical one than a practical one.
