Why was Wandering Ones printed?

It was a one-drop Spirit for Spiritcraft decks.

Cube Request

New 04 Feb 2013 Asked by altimis 11 Comments

04/02/2013: Maro, I have an awkward complaint. There's no mono-blue, CMC 6, vanilla creature. I need one for my terrible cube. The other slots are filled with Wandering Ones, Lemengrid Warden, River Kajin, Amphin Cutthroat, Armored Cancrix, [missing], and Vizzerdrix. Filling in that missing 6 drop would be much appreciated! Oh, and I mean strictly vanilla. Right now, Shoal Serpent is it's placeholder, because it's not exactly french vanilla whenever there's a land drop. Okay, thanks! :)

I’ll see what I can do.

Vanilla Creatures Appreciation

New 18 Apr 2012 Asked by jtreat 2 Comments

How much of the derision for vanilla creatures is owed to them always being strictly worse than their counterparts? Maybe vanillas would be appreciated more if there were more Armored Warhorses and Nessian Coursers and fewer Wandering Ones. Maybe R&D has already figured this out...

The reason we tend not to push vanilla creatures is we only get to push so many cards and players enjoy more getting excited about the new and different things unique to that set. That said, occasionally we’ll push a vanilla creature usually when it ties into the block at hand (Wooly Thoctar being a relatively recent example).
