Walk the Plank

Card Power Assessment

New 28 Mar 2024 Asked by lazcarno 35 Comments

Shoot the Sheriff seems rather overpowered. In any format other than OTJ Limited, it basically says "destroy target creature." Do you have any idea why this card is 1B when things like Victim of the Night and Walk the Plank are BB?

We expect it to see some Standard play, but it’s not as overpowered as I think you think it is. The restriction is also more meaningful than it might seem at first glance.

Brain-to-Print Cards

Andrew Veen mentioned in Inside R&D that some card go through many iterations, while others are "Brain-to-print" and almost exactly as they were conceived. Can you think of an example of a card that was brain-to-print? :)

Walk the Plank.

Why does walk the plank kill homarids?

The secret shame: they can’t swim.

Fish Survival Logic

Re: Fleet Swallower and Walk the Plank. Walk the Plank works on fish because it's the first half — being out of the water — that kills them.

Flavor vs Gameplay

Hey, Maro, I was wondering; why did the design team allow Fleet Swqllower to be killed by Walk the Plank? It has caused quite a bit of flavor unrest at my prerelease, and still resides as an odd interaction, due to both the title/name of the card and it being a fish.

Ease of gameplay trumps 100% flavor matching.

Black's Destruction Specialty

New 15 Oct 2017 Asked by nlewin 30 Comments

Are doom blade effects ("Destroy target non-black creature") still supported in black's slice of the color pie?

Yes. Black is number one in creature destruction and it can have limitations as Walk the Plank in Ixalan demonstrates.

Pirate Merfolk Logic

On Pirate Merfolk: Is the real reason they don't exist because the captain can't keep them in line by threatening to make them walk the plank? :)

Walk the Plank Explanation

Walk the Plank kills fish because you have to pull the fish onto the boat first, and they suffocate. However Merfolk can withstand both air and water.

A fine point.

It never came up.

Walk the Plank Design

New 24 Sep 2017 Asked by shadesofpink 31 Comments

Was there ever a discussion to make Walk the Plank more similar to Victim of Night? Ie Instant speed, and mention other races that would be silly to make Walk the Plank like Fish, Leviathans etc

We chose for simplicity and not hit the tribal one that was relevant.

Pirate Policy Changes

New 03 Apr 2015 Asked by judgeburris 90 Comments

"Pirates have moved lower on the list as the most anti-pirate person is no longer in R&D." What you're saying is, there was mutiny and you made the anti-Pirate person walk the plank. Is this correct?
