Vesuvan Shapeshifter

Hilarious Gameplay

Happy birthday Mark!!!
In a recent game of commander with my friends, something truly hilarious happened. I was able to copy an Ancient Golden Dragon with my Vesuvan Shapeshifter, which had already four +1/+1 counters. It was a really big play, since I'd be able to establish defenses with a single attack. So I attack, deal combat damage, roll the d20 and... natural 1. We all laughed for minutes straight.
I create one 1/1 token, pass the turn, and in three consequent attacks, I get defeated.
It was hilarious and one of the best games I played in recent times :')

Cycle Discovery

Wait, from your article I can see that Weathered Bodyguards, Vesuvan Shapeshifter, Liege of the Pit, Fortune Thief and Thelonite Hermit are a cycle? The things I get to learn here after all these years still amaze me.

It’s part of why I write about design. We spend a lot of time on it and not everything we’ve done is instantly apparent.

Clones and Legendary Logic

New 28 Apr 2013 Asked by dkirzane 3 Comments

From Dragon Along: "The creative doesn't really need [lands] to be legendary. Lands don't actually represent lands in the game, but rather they represent links to the mana found within the land. ... You may not be able to have two copies of the same character but you can have multiple mana taps of the same place." What about token creatures or clones, then? Creatively, should I be able to have a Spitting Image or a Vesuvan Shapeshifter of a legendary creature?

The cloning of legendary permanents is a little bit wonky from a creative perspective. I mean the clone clearly isn’t actually the thing, it’s a clone, so from a purely flavor standpoint they should co-exist. The game engine though has issues with it and the rules working unfortunately has to trump flavor.

Art Symmetry Choices

New 23 Oct 2012 Asked by hubda 7 Comments

I've recently looked at the card Vesuvan Shapeshifter and noticed that it is very close to symmetrical, although not quite. I've also looked at some other cards that look that they might be symmetrical and I haven't found a single card that is perfectly symmetrical! As far as you know, was this a conscious decision made by the artists?

Probably.
