The Immortal Sun

Immortal Sun Color

If made today, would The Immortal Sun be a white artifact?

Possibly, but it would be a monowhite design if we had done that, not the current version.

Antimagic Field Effects

New 08 Jul 2021 Asked by zanthr 57 Comments

In that case, if a plane had something approximating an Antimagic Field (as in D&D), would a planeswalker be prevented from planeswalking out of it?

The Immortal Sun prevented planeswalking.

Artifact and Enchantment in Future Story

New 25 Apr 2020 Asked by calituco-blog 36 Comments

Hi Mark, hope you and your family are safe these days. Gotta little questoin about magic story. Most of the time, planes feature important Artifacts of great power, that are relevant to the overarching story of magic, liker the Helvault, the Immortal Sun, the Planar Bridge, or the Chain Veil. May I request more important Enchantment (like Calix or The Great Aurora) for future magic stories?

You may.

Future Plans for Angrath

New 26 Mar 2020 Asked by djelibaebi-deactivated20240223 69 Comments

What’s the plans for Angrath now that the immortal sun has run its numbers? - there doesn’t seem much that could make him involved in a story on anything but his home plane.

There are many ways to motivate characters.

Angrath's Arrival

New 07 Apr 2019 Asked by gaiaix555 55 Comments

If I may ask, why is specifically Angrath on Ravnica? I would assume he would refuse a summons from across the planes for help when he JUST got freed from the Immortal Sun on Ixalan and was quick to planeswalk away back to his home plane (presumably). If “Ignite the Beacon” is supposed to be Ajani and co. calling across the planes for help, why would Angrath respond? In that same vein, why specifically is he still black? I understand part of it for him being a pirate, but he left that behind.

Bolas wanted to gather as many planeswalkers on Ravnica as he could do many, different plans were put in motion. Angrath is on Ravnica because Bolas figured out what would have to happen to make it so.

Azor Spark Loss

New 19 Jan 2019 Asked by viashinowizard 46 Comments

Wasn't Azor a creature because he gave up his spark to make the Immortal Sun? Jace, Vraska, Angrath, and Huatli were all still planeswalker cards even while they were on Ixlan and were prevented from planeswalking

Inability to planeswalk is not the same as losing your spark.

Immortal Sun Lore Question

New 11 Jan 2019 Asked by succulentgrapetoads 38 Comments

How does Immortal Sun make sense lore-wise in the Ravnica sets if it's Nicol Bolas' trump card? All of the people he's controlling in Ravnica are planeswalkers, they may be powerful, but wouldn't they weaken under the Sun's influence?

I think you misunderstand what the Immortal Sun does.

Azor’s Spark Sacrifice

To clarify, Azor WAS a sphinx Planeswalker. He gave up his spark to make the Immortal Sun.

Correct. I meant one on a card.

Sagas on Unknown Stories

New 28 May 2018 Asked by hgghy123 52 Comments

SAGAS BASED ON PREVIOUSLY UNHEARD STORIES: i would LOVE that! The greatest flaw of magic right now is that the stories seem to focus invariably on a single series of events. This would never happen in real life. Look at current events: North Korea, the Middle East, Donald Trump, etc. On Kaladesh, though? the Revolt. That's it! Even on Ixalan, which has good worldbuilding, everything revolves around the Immortal Sun. Sagas on unheard stories would go a long way toward verisimilitude.

The problem is Sagas have no room for flavor text and have to convey everything through name, art and rules text. It makes it very difficult to tell a story that’s completely unknown.

Immortal Sun Design

New 23 Feb 2018 Asked by ckmo-ink-deactivated20230105 75 Comments

Why was Immortal Sun designed to stop Planeswalkers from activating abilities instead of stopping people from playing Planeswalkers? It makes no sense that the Immortal Sun effectively stops a planeswalker from doing something if it's already on the battlefield, and ties in flavorfully if it stops players from calling on Planeswalkers instead.

When good gameplay and flavor butt heads, we tend to err on the side of good gameplay.

Augment Cost Clarification

New 29 Jan 2018 Asked by beckon616 20 Comments

Can I use cards like Super Secret Tech, Bronze Calendar, and/or The Immortal Sun to reduce the cost of an augment card? There's some discussion in my play group so I thought I'd co.e to the source on an official ruling.

No, reducing casting costs does not reduce activation costs, which is what Augment is.

Baron Von Count Mechanics

New 06 Jan 2018 Asked by drohack 19 Comments

For [Baron Von Count] do cards that decrease the casting cost of cards alter the number on the card in relation to moving the doom counter? For example if I have [The Immortal Sun] on the field and I cast [Ember Swallower] for 1RR would Baron Von Count still count the #2 on the cards casting cost or would it be altered to a #1? (if this is the case then this would effectively make [Ember Swallower] only have the numbers 1,3,4,5 instead of 1,2,3,4,5).

Decreasing the casting cost doesn’t change the physical number printed on the card which is what the Baron cares about.
