M19 Praise

New 21 Jun 2018 Asked by btwofftopic 29 Comments

Did I speak too soon about how much I love M19? Every spoiler blows me away! Switcheroo and its Scarface flavor text are my new favorite thing. A quick report: the greatest, most faithful and wholehearted HATER I’ve ever known, who’s complained about “everything” Wizards has ever done, said today something like: “You know what? I’m enjoying M19. Nothing reads broken, yet everything feels somewhat powerful in the right context”. Have a high five fest, please! Congratulations to everyone involved!

Glad to hear you’re happy.

Speculation on Ixalan

New 14 Sep 2017 Asked by make-mrd-pure-again 49 Comments

There's been a lot of speculation that Ixalan is a continent on Dominaria, Kamigawa, and Ravnica. Is the "Planet of the Apes Switcheroo" something R&D would even consider nowadays?

The only Planet of the Apes moment we’ve ever planned was when Scars of Mirrodin, the fall set, was New Phyrexia and the block ended with the reveal that it was actually Mirrodin.

Card Naming Process

Who names cards? Because I don't understand why Creative would allow a card called Switcheroo but take an absolute stance against a squirrel every now and then. Isn't that a bit of a double standard?

Doug Beyer is on the creative team and is in charge of names and flavor text. Note that Doug is not the one making the call on no squirrels.

Clone Rarity Change

New 23 Sep 2012 Asked by delirimouse 2 Comments

Have you ever considered Clone (and friends) being an uncommon? It seems like it could be a good effect to put in the now vacant Mind Control slot, along with cards like Switcheroo. (PS: Thank you for getting Mind Control out of Uncommon.)

Clone started as an uncommon but it proved to be complicated enough that we moved the effect to rare.  Note that we do have limited style clone effects, such as populate, at lower rarities. In populate’s case, even common.

Humorous Card Names

New 20 Sep 2012 Asked by lowbeyonder 9 Comments

As someone who prefers his Magic relatively straight and with little silliness, I'd happily take an entire tribal squirrel block if it meant I never had to cast "Switcharoo" or "Thrill-Kill Assassin". Seriously, what is with those names?

Names like mechanics have to appeal to a wide swath of players that want very different things. I for one love the name Switcheroo.

Is there a bit of Red in Switcheroo?

If it were temporary, it would be red.

Favorite M13 Cards

New 02 Jul 2012 Asked by thoughtsunderseas 1 Comments

Dear Maro, I couldn't help but notice that Switcheroo looks exactly like the sort of card you love. Are there any other M13 cards you'd have built around when you were still playing professionally?

I didn’t make Switcheroo but I did make Tempest’s Legerdemain. One of my favorite decks in my pre-Wizards days involved Gauntlets of Chaos and Juxtapose.

Core Set Designs

New 02 Jul 2012 Asked by hakuromatsu-blog 2 Comments

Why are new cards being designed for core sets? Murder, Omniscience, Switcheroo, Serpent's Gift in M13 filled me with a feeling of foreboding that Magic's remaining simple designs are being exhausted too quickly.

We can always reprint things, especially in the core sets, so I wouldn’t worry.

Card Name Favorites

Are there any cards in Magic (present or upcoming, not counting playtest names) with a better name than Switcheroo?

There’s an Unhinged card called “Ach, Hans! Run!”.
