Jace's Flavor Text Mistake

New 22 Jun 2017 Asked by subbak 373 Comments

Do you think Jace wouldn't be so hated by a section of the fanbase if you hadn't made the mistake of giving him trash-talking counterspells flavor text? Or is it just all JTMS's fault?

The trash talking counterspell was a mistake. I started it when writing for Ertai back during the Weatherlight Saga. Players liked it so we kept doing it. When the planeswalkers came along, we swapped in Jace’s name because he was the blue planeswalker. The problem is Jace never talks like that. Read all his stories, it’s not his character. So yes, a lot of this negative perspective comes from a mistake we made that we have since rectified.Here. I’m making flavor text errata. All smart ass counterspell Jace flavor text is now made by Race, an obnoxious blue mage we haven’t focused much on. : )

Character Popularity Discussion

I get that not everyone needs to identify with every character, and obviously every character has traits some players dislike. BUT, and I'm not saying this is the case, but hypothetically, if the traits that made Jace the most popular player stand-in were also traits that many players "un-identify with" for the specific reason that they're stereotypical derogatory "geek" characteristics - such as "socially awkward" and "thinks he's much smarter than he is" - would you consider that a problem?

No one is being forced to like Jace. I hope people actually learn the character before hating him because a lot of people seem to judge him by his leftover from Ertai counterspell smart ass flavor text that should never have been attributed to him.But if you are disinterested in him or dislike him or hate him, that’s fine. We have a whole lineup of diverse planeswalkers for you to choose from that are not at all like Jace. All I ask is you stop accusing me of lying that players like Jace. There’s no reason for me to lie to you about it. We move toward what the players want. If characters are popular, they’re more likely to get screen time. And we are working hard to give screen time to as many planeswalkers as we can. Kiora, Ob Nixilis, Ugin, Sorin, Nahiri, Tamiyo, Tezzeret, Dovin, Saheeli, Samut and Nicol Bolas have all gotten screen time in the story in the last two years, not to mention the Gatewatch. Just remember that how you and your friends feel is not always indicative of how the majority of players feel. And the vocal part of the internet is not always a good sampling.

Silver Border Specifics

New 27 Jan 2017 Asked by piogre 21 Comments

"Silver border cares specifically about the exact card you’re playing: language, artist, rarity, all of it." - does this mean that cards like Smart Ass and Mise work differently from black border in terms of the game action of naming a card? Or does Mise still work if I name "Brainstorm" and reveal "Gedankenwirbel"?

When naming a card, any name from any language of it works. When affected by a card based on its name (say with Unhinged’s Double Header) it looks specifically at the name of the card being affected.

Black Border Possibility

Could Smart Ass be done in black border? The only difference I can see between it and multiple black border cards with a similar effect, is that the opponent MAY reveal their hand to show that the named card ISN'T there (and you get the reward if they don't), instead of FORCING the opponent to reveal their hand to determine for certain (and you get the reward if it is there). I don't see why the former effect couldn't be done in black border; could it?

The only thing that I believe we couldn’t do in black border of Smart Ass is fractional power/toughness.

Smart Ass Design Origin

Was Smart Ass and its cycle all top-down design?

The designs were made to match the names so it was top-down in that regard.

Alternate Win Mechanisms

New 06 Dec 2012 Asked by floydmcmondo 7 Comments

Alternate win tends to be alternate to how much damage your opponent takes. Poison and Poisonous were both about how often your opponent was damaged by a Poisonous creature (or how often Swamp Mosquito or Suq’Ata Assassin attacked unblocked) as opposed to how much damage they took. Poisonous 1 needed 10 hits. Poisonous 3 needed 4 hits. Infect cared about how much damage your opponent took, like double strike that doesn’t care about life gain, so it felt “less” alternate win.

Would poisonous feel less alternate win if every creature was Poisonous 2? Also, there were ways to get poison other than creature damage such as proliferate. Did it feel more alternate win when you got proliferated to death? I’m not trying to be a smart ass, I’m honestly trying to understand the difference. (Because I currently don’t.)

Ignoring the half power, could something like Smart Ass ever make black border?

Probably.

Regarding the sadfacts question: you should have just answered as normal, if only because you suck at being an ass. You're too good of a man.

I wasn’t trying to be an ass. I was just trying to make the point that being a smart ass isn’t the way to get me to answer your question. I apologize if I upset anyone.
