Show of Confidence

Storm Scale Discussion

Should it still be called the storm scale when new cards in standard sets occasionally have almost the exact rules text for storm written out on them? Thousand year storm and show of confidence are both cards that were put into standard that either have or grant an ability that is (almost) just storm. I know storm counts any spell and those two cards only see instants and sorceries, but in modern and legacy, storm decks tend to run almost exclusively instants and sorceries, with the only permanent spells being cards that enable them to cast more instants and sorceries. I know inertia is a powerful thing and you almost certainly won’t rename it, but I feel like a better name would be something like “the ante scale” or “banding scale”. What do you think?

Things that are 10 can appear in Standard-legal sets. Die-rolling is the example. So, even if exact Storm showed up in a premier set, I’m not planning to change the name of the scale. Word equity is important.

Score of Storm on Storm Scale

Is Storm still a 10 on the Storm Scale? It feels like we've had more safe designs for Storm being tested in non-Standard products (Weather the Storm and Galvanic Relay come to mind), and have even had at least one non-keyworded Storm-like ability in Strixhaven (Show of Confidence), not to mention Strixhaven adding the Storm ability to the Historic format through the Mystical Archives. While none of the above things are dictated exactly by the Storm Scale, it feels like Storm has been getting more attention from Wizards recently. If Storm stops being a 10 on the Storm Scale, will it become the Banding Scale or the Dredge Scale?

I don’t see us printing Storm in a premier set, and even if we did, I doubt I’d change the name as it would just cause confusion as so many know it by that name.

Re: regarding your reply to a question I had about Show of Confidence can you elaborate on how it is a more "limited" version of Storm as it seems to be a 1 to 1 version of Storm all without the name

Storm counts every spell you cast this turn. Show of Confidence only counts instants and sorceries.

Show of Confidence Design

Question. When the design team created Show of Confidence in Strixhaven did they ever refer to its first ability (the one that copies it) as storm?

No, because it’s a more limited version.

Show of Confidence Interpretation

Does Show of Confidence mean you have to rename the Storm Scale, the Banding Scale? :) before you answer make sure you are confident.

“Every spell” is a bit different than “every instant or sorcery”. : )
