Seal of Fire

Request for More Seal Effects

New 13 Aug 2021 Asked by honor-basquiat 45 Comments

May I request more "Seal" effects that don't require a mana cost to activate (i.e. Seal of Removal, Seal of Fire)? I notice you seldom make these types of cards now a days but I enjoy playing with them in constructed Magic.

R&D isn’t super happy with his they play, so we do them infrequently.

Trivia About Shock Variants

Hi MaRo! My housemate doesn't have tumblr, but I'm wondering if I could cash in her birthday trivia on her behalf? She'd like to know if you have any trivia about Shock and the Shock variants that seem to appear in most sets. (Seal of Fire is her favorite of these variants)

I designed the seals, including Seal of Fire, originally as a way to pay for a spell on one turn, but use it on another. I tried it originally as a spell, but ended up making it an enchantment. My experiment with trying to make it a spell helped get me to flashback.Happy Birthday to your housemate!

Seal Cards Consideration

Was a cycle of "Seal" cards (like Seal of Doom and Seal of Fire) ever considered for Theros block?

We talked about it. EDIT: Oh yeah, the Fonts. We did do it.

The 'Seal of Fire' found in Jace vs Chandra DD is an example of Chandra with her "normal" hair :)

Naming Conventions

I've heard people call "seal of fire" things like "shock on a stick". Do you guys have a term for enchantments that sacrifice for an ability?

Interesting enough, we call them seals.

Constructing Effective Cards

I enjoyed your article about bad cards, but I fail to see one aspect - Why not make niche cards instead? For example, Shock, Electrostatic bolt, Burning Cloak, Firebolt, Seal of Fire, & Pillar of flame. Those are 8 well-known and powerful cards... all of which deal exactly 2 damage for 1 mana, but are each different. Instead of making them bad, make them fantastic in very specific situations. For example, Selesnya Sentry regenerating off of discarding a green card instead of 5G?

A key component of good game design is making players overcome obstacles. Sometimes those obstacles can be the cards themselves.
