Use of Emblems on Cards

New 12 Jun 2022 Asked by rukalin-chan 54 Comments

Why don't non-planeswalker cards use emblems for "until end of game" effects? For example, why don't Sea Gate Restoration and Finale of Revelation make an emblem with "You have no maximum hand size"? Is it to conserve token-slots?

We’ve chosen to make emblems just a planeswalker thing to keep them more special.

Concerns about Plane Returns

New 19 Aug 2021 Asked by hugsandambitions 99 Comments

Mark, I feel like you might be overcorrecting in these recent returns. We returned to Zendikar after it was devastated by Eldrazi, and it wasn't just "No eldrazi remain," it was as if it never happened. Sea Gate in one piece. No hint of grey dust or bismuth distortions. No stories of economic recovery, the bonds forged in hardship, no.... scars. Yarok was a great example of those scars, but we only got him in a core set and that was it. I'm worried Innistrad will go the same way.

There is a difference between Zendikar still having scars of the Eldrazi occupation and us choosing to focus on that in the cards we picked. Those scars are very much still there.

Emblems vs Enduring Effects

New 18 Apr 2021 Asked by maskedthespian 35 Comments

Mechanically, what is the difference between a Planeswalker Emblem and an effect that lasts "for the rest of the game" but with no marker or counter indicating that effect (such as on Finale of Revelation, Praetor's Counsel, Sea Gate Restoration, and Stigma Lasher)?

Mechanically, not much. Thematically, a bit.

Color of Spell-Copying Ability

New 14 Oct 2020 Asked by sailorforce 34 Comments

I thought copying spells was something you wanted to shift out of blue and in to red. Is Sea Gate Stormcaller a reversal of that trend, a one-time exception, or have I just misunderstood what you guys are up to?

It’s both a blue and a red ability. Both colors can access it.

Wall Creature Concept

New 06 Jul 2017 Asked by levi-lottinville-blog 38 Comments

I always thought of walls as the Yokai spirits from Japan mythology that took the form of walls and were sentient and/or sapient. Also from what I can tell neither the Hekama or Sea Gate were sentient, which would disqualify them as creatures.

Wall of Stone isn’t all the sentient either. : )

Legendary Walls Future

New 05 Jul 2017 Asked by eachdayaholiday 96 Comments

The Hekma and the Sea Gate were both good opportunities to do legendary walls. More will come. Or should I say, more wall come.

I’m not sure how you design the Hekma as a creature.

Filler Storyline Feedback

New 12 Nov 2015 Asked by abundantfrog 51 Comments

I think it's the filler stories causing problems, like the one just now about teysa, and the one about meren, where we get part of a story, establish that there's more we haven't seen, then the story goes away indefinitely (to our knowledge), where we now have teysa, meren, Sea Gate unresolved off the top of my head. We know when we'll have more added to the zendikar/eldrazi story, but we don't know when meren or teysa will be added onto

But I think many players like the one of stories to allow us to occasionally peek in on other storylines.

Ob Nixilis Story Arc

New 05 Oct 2015 Asked by futhington-blog 70 Comments

Ob being resparked is obviously shown, and I think that the story is told well and in a clear fashion (Jace and Ugin talk it out and have some big disagreements, Gideon retakes Sea Gate, Nissa's connection to Zendikar returns after some wandering, eventually they agree to at least temporarily seal Ulamog in the Aligned Hedron Network and do so, Ob Nixilis runs around and resparks at some point). But I never learned from the cards how Ob reignited. I wish that had been there.

It seems like that one point should have been on a card. This is a learning process and as someone that can see ahead, the creative team is going full throttle in figuring out the best way to tell the story through the game.

Sea Gate Oracle Fired

New 29 Aug 2015 Asked by Anonymous 703 Comments

Man, it's really too bad that Sea Gate got destroyed like that. If only there had been someone living there who could have seen it coming, like some kind of Oracle or something, maybe this could have been avoided. Oh well.
