Pygmy Giant

Pygmy Giant Usage

New 10 Mar 2020 Asked by thoalmighty 41 Comments

Un-rules question: can Pygmy Giant throw Crookshank Kobolds to deal 24 million damage, or does the giant need it to be written out with numerals?

Written out numbers work just fine.

Protection from Wordy

New 15 Jul 2016 Asked by dace67 23 Comments

Protection from Wordy doesn't look at flavor text? I thought all cards that mention the text box care about flavor text too since that is an Un-design space. Pygmy Giant even references how it should work in it's flavor text.

There are cards that do look at flavor text. Protection from wordy works against wordy cards. Grizzly Bears, no matter what flavor text it has, isn’t wordy.

Flavor Text Count

Does punctuate count flavour text? Likewise, does Pygmy giant count flavour text?

Both count flavor text.

Rules Text Interpretation

Re: Frazzled Editor Un-ruling. You said it doesn't count flavor text, but Pygmy Giant from the same set seems to think flavor text matters. They both use the same term, "text box." What gives?

“Protection from wordy” only refers to rules text. Un-cards that care about text boxes care about the entire text box. A vanilla creature is not “wordy”.

Humor Range

New 20 Mar 2014 Asked by magicvorthos 15 Comments

Comedy in Magic is good, in my opinion, only if it fits the world. So yeah, goblins can have silly flavor text, but something like Pygmy Giant (and its own flavor text) is too much for me.

Un-sets, on purpose, go farther with the humor than black border cards do.

Rules Interpretation

Un-rules question: For Pygmy Giant, can an X in a text box count as 10 since it's the roman numeral for 10?

Nope. Sorry.

Meta-humor Cards

New 28 Nov 2013 Asked by ccgnick 32 Comments

To clarify: I love the metahumor, but done in a way that lets the cards still feel natural alongside other Magic cards. Magical Hacker just feels awkward put next to "real" cards, whereas Pygmy Giant's flavor text was hilarious to me, and things like breaking the card frame/Greater Morphling's fourth-wall allusion are enjoyable. Granted, I assume that there are other players love the sort of genre-breaking stuff I dislike, and I'm being sorta unclear, so I almost feel guilty bringing this up!

How many people would be upset if a third Un-set didn’t have a creature representing Spike? (Unglued had Timmy and Unhinged had Johnny.) That’s meta-humor. It’s not remotely in game.

Specific Damage Question

Un-Rules Question: If I sacrifice Swarm of Rats to Pygmy Giant, am I allowed to have it deal "hundreds, thousands, millions" points of damage, or does it have to be a specific number?

It has to be a specific number.

Flavor Text Inspired Card

Have you ever designed a card based on flavor text?

The first thing I came up with for Pygmy Giant, from Unhinged, was the flavor text.

Copy Flavor Text Rules

New 07 Mar 2013 Asked by tactical-hotdog 11 Comments

Hey, MaRo, do copies of cards retain that card's flavor text? My friend's running a janktastic Soul Foundry + Crookshanks Kobolds + Pygmy Giant deck, and I want to know if he can really do that.

In silver-bordered world, copies copy everything about the card including flavor text.
