Psychic Network and Aeather Vortex

New 06 Jul 2021 Asked by gurrgleing 42 Comments

What happens when psychic network and yet another aether vortex are in play at the same time?

It gets weird. You can have permanents on the battlefield, but not be aware what they are. It’s kind of like how Illusionary Mask and Camouflage originally worked except it’s flipped in that everyone *but* you knows what it is.

Psychic Network House Rule

"What ruling did I make that changed Psychic Network?" Initially, you said PN + YAAV meant your top card was on your forehead and the battlefield, and you couldn't see it. You could try attacking with it to see if it was a creature, or tapping it to see if you got mana (and your opponents tell you the results). You later ruled that was too inconsistent, and YAAV revealing the card meant that you were entitled to know what it was. I get the reasoning, but we play it the old way because fun. : )

I stand by both my ruling and your house rule to ignore it. : )

Chaos Deck Fun

On the subject of silver-border rules, I wanted to let you know that I have a chaos-themed, non-trying-to-win Narset commander deck that uses lots of Un cards, and it's a blast. I have both Psychic Network and Yet Another Æther Vortex, and while I appreciate your later ruling clarification, I choose to play it the older way, with no one knowing what's on their foreheads, because it is truly incredible the amount of hilarious confusion it causes. Thank you for making such things possible. : )

What ruling did I make that changed Psychic Network?

Psychic Network Interaction

Un-rules manager sir! How does Psychic Network work with Yet Another AEther Vortex?

While Psychic Network doesn’t let you look at the top card of your library, Yet Another Aether Vortex does, so there isn’t any weird interaction.

Un-rules Consistency

Is there a reason you changed your stance on Yet Another Æther Vortex with Psychic Network? You used to say your opponents can see your card, but you can't, and they just have to let you know when it affects something, or whether or not trying to attack with it works, etc. Personally I find that a lot sillier and more fun.

It’s inconsistent with how the rules work. I want the Un-rules to be fun but I don’t want them to contradict black bordered rules.

Card Interaction Quirk

Yet Another Aether Vortex + Psychic Network. Can you look at the top card of your library, or do you just have to trust your opponents?

Unfortunately the result is not as crazy as I’m sure you were hoping for. Psychic Network forces everyone to hold the top card to your forehead but Yet Another Aether Vortex let’s you see your own card. You do have a little wackiness of having a card on the battlefield also be on your forehead, but you don’t have to ask your opponents to fill you in on what’s going on.

Card Game Interactions

If Psychic Network and Yet Another AEther Vortex are on the field at the same time, do they both work on the same card, or do you also reveal the second card on the top of your library since the card revealed off Psychic Network isn't on top of your library anymore.

The card being held to your head is considered the top card of the library still and yes, it is also considered on the battlefield with this combo. And yes, it leads to some weird scenarios as you can have a permanent that affects the battlefield without you knowing what it is.

How do Yet Another Aether Vortex and Psychic Network interact? Can I try to attack with the top card if I think it's a creature?

You can try. Everyone else will let you know what happens.

If you have Psychic Network and Yet Another AEther Vortex in play, can you declare the permanent you cannot see as an attacker/blocker?

You can try. Those that can see it will have to let you know if you are attempting to make an illegal move.

I have a Silver-Bordered rules question. What happens if I control both Psychic Network and Yet Another Æther Vortex?

You will at times have a permanent in play that you cannot see.

If Psychic Network and Yet Another Aether Vortex are in play does your opponent have to tell you if you have a card like Elesh Norn that affects the board state on your forehead?

Your opponent must tell you when actions you are taking are impacted by the card on your forehead. For example, “Your 1/1 is now a 0/0 and is dead.”

Silver-Bordered Rules Query

Dear Mr. Silver-Bordered Rules Guru: Could you please explain the interaction between Psychic Network and Yet Another Aether Vortex? If I control both, is the card on my forehead in play if it is a non-instant and non-sorcery card? Or does the vortex cancel out the network?

The card on your head is in fact in play as well as being on the top of your library and on your forehead. Ah, I love Un-sets.

Okay...ever consider "You are allowed to look at your opponent's library and your opponents are allowed to look at your library"? Like putting poker cards on your forehead?

Unglued has a card called Psychic Network where each player is forced to hold the top card of their library against their forehead for all opponents, but not themselves, to see.
