Trivia About One Mana Cards

New 22 May 2021 Asked by attracte 75 Comments

Hey Mark! My birthday was yesterday, and I was wondering if you had any trivia about one mana value cards over the years?? (I have a One Drop Cube!)

Phyrexian Dreadnought (Mirage)This card came about because I wanted to add a 12/12 to Magic. You see, Alpha had an 8/8 in Force of Nature. Antiquities had a 9/9 in Colossus of Sardia. The Dark then got a 10/10 in Leviathan. Followed up by the 11/11 Polar Kraken in Ice Age. This seemed like a fun game that I wanted to continue playing. Bill Rose, now Vice President of R&D, was the lead designer of Mirage. He said he would add it if I could design a cool enough card. The next day I returned and said, “Is a 12/12 trampler for 1 cool enough?”Happy Birthday!

Rolling the Dice for Trivia

New 11 Apr 2021 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 113 Comments

Just for fun, could you roll a d20 and give us trivia based on the resulting number?

Okay, I rolled a 12.The first 12/12 was Phyrexian Dreadnaught. Alpha had Force of Nature which was an 8/8. Antiquities had Colossus of Sardia which was a 9/9. The Dark had Leviathan which was a 10/10. Ice Age had Polar Kraken which was an 11/11. In Mirage development, I wanted to make a 12/12, but Bill Rose, the lead developer of the set, said he would only add one if it was a cool design. I created Phyrexian Dreadnaught and showed it to him. He put it right in the set.

Krakens in Kaldheim

New 18 Jan 2021 Asked by mrtitanic 63 Comments

Does Kaldheim have any Krakens? This seems like the plane to have them. I have always wanted a Snow Creature - Kraken. As a nod to the Polar Kraken from Ice Age, which is not a snow creature, but should be IMO.

Previews are almost over. We bettter get Kraken. : )

Since Polar Kraken and Leviathan are already B.F.M.'s earrings, do you think it wears Emrakul as a hat?

Maybe as a broach.

Creatures Size Evolution

New 18 Nov 2013 Asked by orlouge82 25 Comments

Green currently "has the biggest creatures," but when Magic first started, blue had the biggest (besides artifacts creatures like Phyrexian Dreadnought and Colossus of Sardia, the game's biggest creatures were Leviathan and Polar Kraken). I understand the flavor reasons for green now getting the biggest creatures, but what are the flavor reasons for blue continuing to have such big creatures?

We decided not to let blue have everything. : ) Let the snarky comments commence.

Krakens vs. Iconics

New 04 Jul 2013 Asked by foxtrot929 13 Comments

"We tried krakens many years ago and they never got much fanfare." Maro!! What?!?! Krakens are awesome! The first card I ever traded for was Polar Kraken. I loved that card even though I only ever won one game with it (it's a little hard to cast). But the game I did win was AWESOME. Plus, krakens could totally beat up sphinxes any day.

I wasn’t saying were not going to make krakens anymore because I’m sure we will. I was saying we’ve decided not to make them blue’s iconic creature.  They also, by the way, aren’t great at capturing the ethos of blue.

B.F.M.'s Earring Mystery

New 24 Aug 2012 Asked by wuyley 2 Comments

Speaking of B.F.M. What slug is on his horn as an earring? Is it that blue Kracken thing from Iceage?

His earrings are Phyrexian Dreadnaught (12/12 from Mirage) and Polar Kraken (11/11 from Ice Age), the then two largest creatures in Magic.
