White's Counterspells Potential

So white can do taxing counterspells. Can it also do bouncing counterspells or reparations counterspells?

In color pie, white can do delay counterspells like Memory Lapse. There is not much desire in R&D to do white counterspells though.

Homelands Trivia Anecdote

New 15 May 2021 Asked by aliceshiki123 48 Comments

Mark, yesterday was my 25th birthday! May I ask a trivia on your favorite card from Homelands?

Sure. Bill Rose came to Wizards to interview for a job. After the interview, which went well, they had him sit in on a Homelands development meeting. They had a hole in blue, so Bill gave them a card from the set he was working on (Mirage) to fill the hole. That card is my favorite card in Homelands - Memory Lapse. Happy Birthday!

White and Counterspelling

New 25 Jan 2021 Asked by clarks2009 124 Comments

Why doesn’t white get more counterspells it’s #2 as far as counter magic is concerned but it has virtually none since mana tithe. I’ve tried a dozen ways to rephrase this but that’s as simply as it can be put.

The Council of Colors has said that white can do mana taxing counterspells and delaying counterspells (like Memory Lapse). The teams making the sets haven’t seemed particularly interested in making any. We can lead the proverbial horse to water…

Memory Lapse Color Shift

New 15 Nov 2020 Asked by naifuneko 36 Comments

Any chance Memory Lapse could ever see a direct color shift to white? Or is that no longer within its pie?

White gets the effect, but not at the same cost (Lapse of Certainty).

White Counterspell Limits

New 23 Jan 2020 Asked by atta-turk 34 Comments

Hi Mark! Curious about the space for a white counterspell... Could white get an unconditional counter effect if the set up was very difficult? Like if it could only be cast during combat and/or required you to have a creature?

No. It can delay (Memory Lapse) or tax (Mana Leak), and at a lower power than blue. That’s it.

Memory Lapse Evaluation

What's your opinion on memory lapse? Too powerful for a standard legal set?

I know it’s a lot stronger than many players think it is, but I’m not sure if it’s too good. Judging power level is not my area of expertise.

What do you think of Lapse of Certainty?

I’ll tell you at the start of the next turn. : I like it. I enjoy white dipping its toe into delay style (or taxing) counterspells.I believe white shouldn’t be as good at it as blue but Lapse of Judgment is no Memory Lapse.

Favorite Homelands Card

What's your favorite card from Homelands?

Memory Lapse. Interestingly it was created by the Mirage design team. Bill Rose was interviewing at Wizards and they had him look at the then unpublished Homelands set. He suggested killing a card and offered up Memory Lapse to replace it.

Today's poll loser, Memory Lapse, was a favorite card of mine. Is it too good/too annoying to be reprinted in a standard-legal set?

I am honestly not sure. Sorry, not a developer but honestly not sure. : )

White Counterspells Nuance

New 29 May 2015 Asked by enthralled-by-victor-blog-b-blo 14 Comments

It's worth noting that counterspells do appear in white, but they only do so in flavorful ways where white is protecting itself from attacks by countering a spell that targets a player or permanent that white controls.

There was also a White Memory Lapse and possibly taxing (although that might have been just Planar Chaos).

There seems to be a new trend where I get asked a question and give a response. Then I get asked again and asked for my answer excluding my previous answer. It feels like you’re trying to get me to say something specific. : )
