Changing Lands with Richard Garfield, PhD

New 16 Jul 2021 Asked by drummerjon131 27 Comments

SILVER BORDER QUESTION: If I have Richard Garfield, PhD. out can I play lands as any other land? Or does that not work since they do not have a mana cost? Would this also apply to cards that do not have a mana cost such as Lotus Bloom?

You can’t play lands as anything else. They don’t have a mana cost.

Richard Garfield Card Usage

New 22 May 2020 Asked by tljwasgreat 23 Comments

What can Richard Garfield Ph.D do with augment cards? Can he make them a suspend card like lotus bloom? Can he make them a black lotus or a mox card. If I'm mindlavering someone who has him in play, can I make him make one into a blacker lotus and tear up their card (obviously there'd be social repercussions independent of any rulings). Can I cast them as something that costs X? Or another Augment? Can I make lands into other lands?

Richard Garfield, PhD can’t do anything with cards that lack a mana cost.

Mana Cost Distinctions

Hi Maro! What is the difference between a card having 0 mana cost, like Pact of Negation and just blank in that upper right side of a card like Lotus Bloom?

You can cast the former and not the latter.

Colorless Mana Symbols

New 22 Feb 2015 Asked by katzsplat 12 Comments

If colorless mana cost was displayed with one symbol per mana like colored mana is, how would you depict a zero-cost card like Ornithopter? And without confusing it with cards that do not have a casting cost like Lotus Bloom?

It’s a problem we would have to solve.

Suspend Isn't Casting

New 16 Feb 2014 Asked by cannotwynn 10 Comments

FYI, since this question seems to be coming up a lot: Suspending isn't casting. You can't normally cast Lotus Bloom from your hand, so you can't use Richard Garfield, Ph.D. and a land to cast it, either.

Casting Without Cost

New 16 Feb 2014 Asked by tengudrum 8 Comments

With Richard Garfield, Ph.D. Could I use a basic land to cast Lotus bloom due to both of them having no Mana cost?

No. Both not having a mana cost is not the same as them matching.

Storm Mechanic Evaluation

New 31 Jan 2014 Asked by auhosj877 55 Comments

I don't really understand why storm is a 10 on the storm scale. Storm really isn't a broken mechanic if there are no cheap rituals in the format. Its pretty simple really. Last time it was in standard with seething song, rite of flame and lotus bloom so it was really good. Its like saying hyopnotic specter is overpowered because you can play it turn 1 off of a dark ritual.

Don’t let Storm sweet talk you. It’s not as harmless as it says it is.

Lotus Criteria

New 28 Nov 2013 Asked by csick3108-deactivated20201213 22 Comments

"It [Lotus Bloom] meets all the criteria [of a Lotus]." No, it doesn't. One criterion is that a lotus costs 0. Lotus Bloom doesn't because it has no mana cost.

No cost is close enough to 0 for me.

Lotus Bloom Definition

Does Lotus Bloom count as a Lotus? It "costs" 3 turns.

That’s fine. It meets all of the criteria.
