Is it true that a small child once handed you a Coke, and you threw a Lava Axe at him?

If it was in a comic, it must be true.

Lava Axe Birthday Trivia

New 20 Oct 2018 Asked by penndragon 75 Comments

Hey Mark, I love your blog! Could I get some birthday trivia on my favorite Red card, Lava Axe?

When you say “Can I axe you a question?” when casting Lava Axe, you are tapping into a bit of linguistic history that dates all the way back to Chaucer. Happy Birthday!

Aggro Reach Definition

New 08 Feb 2016 Asked by silpheed-tandy 21 Comments

Lava Axe gives "reach" to aggro red decks. is there a better word for "reach" (that is, one that isn't confusable with the keyword Reach)?

Could you better define what you mean by “reach”?

Lightning Shrieker Complexity

New 06 Jan 2015 Asked by gwynthehunter 41 Comments

It feels like Lightning Shrieker is far more complicated than one would usually see at common. Wouldn't something with 3 keywords and a shuffle effect be more fit for an uncommon creature, in terms of complexity?

Just think of it as a very themed Lava Axe. : )

Variant Lava Axe

Interesting design on lightning shrieker. Am I right in guessing that this card is serving as a variant lava axe effect for this set?

You are correct.

Flavor Text Quoting

New 10 Oct 2013 Asked by floydmcmondo 22 Comments

On the Flavor Text podcast, Matt mentioned flavor text that is fun to quote when playing the card. I still say "Catch!" to my opponents when I cast Lava Axe.

When people quote your flavor txt when they cast your card, you did something right.

Keywording Mill Discussion

New 28 Apr 2012 Asked by b321gonzo-blog 2 Comments

As far as keywording mill, what is wrong with burn? It makes sense flavorfully. Target player burns 10 cards (from their library). Book Burning is a card that helps make sens of this flavorfully. It's also a word that it's already been nicknamed. I've heard mill 10 cards, deck 10 cards, and burn 10 cards. As I was typing this I think I may know the problem. Calling it burn would make it sound it belongs in red's piece of the color pie? You know what, just migrate milling to red :D

The problem is a lot of players use the term “burn” as a slang for direct damage. “Lava Axe. I’ll burn you for five.”

Self-Targeted Damage Logic

New 27 Mar 2012 Asked by emmermonster 3 Comments

Is there any situation in magic where you would want to point targeted direct damage (lava axe, lightning bolt, &c.) at yourself?

There are always situations in Magic where you do just about anything. Why would you do damage to yourself? Using a current example, Dark Ascension has a mechanic called fateful hour where you at time will want your life at 5 or less.
