Real World Quotes

You made Karakas upset. It's from Legends and has real world literary quotes :)

We used to put real world quotes in normal expansions but that was a long time ago.

Interesting Lands

Why do you never print any interesting lands anymore? Things with effects like Glacial Chasm, Maze of Ith, Volrath's Stronghold, Karakas, or Horizon Canopy? Unique effects like those on lands, especially ones which don't produce mana, are one of the most interesting deck-building aspects. It allows another entire avenue of resource management to be explored, trading your ability to make land-drops for an effect, and there seems to be no support for those kind of effects at all anymore.

We decided long ago that lands needed to produce mana (or go get you mana) as we want to keep a clear identity between lands and mana. Also, we tend to limit how many other abilities lands have because it’s very hard to track what your opponent’s lands can do.

Karakas Exclusion Reasons

Why wasn't Karakas included in From the Vault: Realms? It's never been reprinted, isn't on the Reserve List, and is extremely hard to find since it's from Legends.

It has a lot to do with factors that I can’t talk about. It’s also banned in Commander which didn’t help its cause.

Karakas and Commander

Just a heads up: Karakas is banned in Commander so it's not very popular in the format. :)

A few people have kindly reminded me of that fact.  Once again, I don’t play Commander. (Mostly due to not playing much outside of work.)

Karakas Explained

What is a Karakas?

It is a legendary land from the expansion Legends (way back in 1994 - Magic’s first large expansion). It interacts with legendary creatures so its popular in formats that they play a large role in (such as Commander).
