Flavor in Mechanics

New 14 Sep 2019 Asked by tmdoublezero 37 Comments

I'm not particularly convinced that flavor should be a relevant factor on whenever red or black gets to destroy a permanent or is powerless to stop it.

You are conflating two things. The way we differentiate artifacts from enchantments from a card concept standpoint leans heavily on a flavor component. As I’ve been saying quite a bit lately, artifacts and enchantments are mechanically very similar. But it’s not as if we make a card and let the creative team decide whether or not it’s an artifact or enchantment. There’s a slot and the design decides what card type it is. If a particular card is an artifact, say Glass Casket, it’s because we, the designers, chose for it to be an artifact. We made it, consciously aware that it will work with artifact synergies and be vulnerable to artifact answers. So, your fear isn’t grounded in any reality. That’s not how we decide what card type something is.

Plane Technology Limits

Is there a limit on how modern or technologically advanced a plane can be? Or it has to have some roots in fantasy/magic like Kaladesh?

We try to keep our worlds more fantasy than science fiction. Technology is always grounded in magic.

Unpopular Meaning

New 20 May 2018 Asked by nedistro 89 Comments

Some (hopefully) constructive criticism: I believe that when you say "was unpopular" you're trying to put a kinder spin on "did not sell well". Many people hear "unpopular" and interpret it as "nobody cares", which invokes an emotional response rather than a more grounded one based on the economics of how the sausage gets made.

When I say “unpopular” what I mean is “using all the data we have available, players communicated that they do don’t like this set as much as other sets”. Yes, that includes sales data, but also market research about both the mechanics and the creative elements, digital data about how much specific cards/mechanics got played, organized play data about how much play there was involving different formats using the product, and all the various messages gleaned from social media/in person interactions.

Hireling Flying Dynamics

Can Hoisted Hireling lose and gain flying multiple times as you hold and let him down? Or once you drop him is he grounded?

He can gain and lose flying if that somehow matters.

Vampire Planeswalker Rarity

Does Sorin have a chokehold on vampire planeswalkers? Since hes been grounded at home it has sucked a little for his fans knowing he won't show up one midnight spoiler. We'd go batty for another vampire walker to en-thrall us. :)

I wouldn’t expect another Vampire planeswalker any time soon. I know, that sucks. : )

Character Development Origins

New 09 Aug 2016 Asked by chumblywumbly 37 Comments

Mark, in Odds and Ends: Eldritch Moon, Part 3 you said Hal and Alena were created by Kimberly Kreines for "Under the Silver Moon". But they're actually from the flavour text of a few Dark Ascension and Avacyn Restored cards such as Briarpack Alpha, Grim Flowering and Grounded. Does R&D look at the flavour text and story articles or books when returning to a world to see if there are characters worth fleshing out into cards? Were they considered too unimportant until Kreines used them?

Until Kimberly fleshed out the character, it was basically just a name attribution. So yes, technically she didn’t make the character but practically she did.

Magic Online Data

New 19 Sep 2012 Asked by deucethunder 1 Comments

What does your magic online data say about the % of limited decks that maindeck Grounded? I get that bad cards have to exist, but there's a huge difference between a card played in 10% of limited decks versus zero percent.

I don’t know the stats on any particular card but I do know from looking at past stats that pretty much everything gets played even cards you wouldn’t think would ever get played.
