Hi Mark! It was my birthday recently :) do you have any fun trivia about the Devotion mechanic?

The devotion mechanic was the redoing of chroma, an ability that first appeared (unnamed) in Future Sight and then (named) in Eventide. Aaron Forsythe originally pitched chroma on a single card in Future Sight, but I held it back because I thought it was a whole mechanic. We had high hopes for chroma, but the audience wasn’t too excited by it. Then when we were making original Theros, we needed a mechanic showing a connection to the Gods, and design team member Zac Hill pitched bring back chroma. We cleaned it up (now only caring about the mana cost of permanents on the battlefield) and renamed it, and it went on to be a beloved mechanic. It goes to show how much execution of a mechanic matters. Happy Birthday!

Norin the Wary from Time Spiral and Saltskitter from Future Sight have incredibly similar designs that we haven't seen anywhere else in Magic. Do you know if those designs being in the same block was a coincidence, or is there a story there?Thanks Mark!

I designed both, so there’s a chance they’re subconsciously connected. Norin the Wary was a top-down design to match the character. Saltskitter was just me making something that felt weird.

Hello Mark! My birthday was on the 3rd, but it's been a busy few days so I'm just now cashing in my birthday trivia!Do you have any trivia on Grove of the Burnwillows? Or perhaps Future Sight as a whole?

Grove of the Burnwillows was part of my cycle of cycles dual land cycle, where each futureshifted dual land represented a whole cycle of dual lands. Grove of the Burnwillows was made as an anti-pain land (aka the Ice Age dual lands), where the cost was the opponent gaining a life instead of you losing one. Happy Belated Birthday!

We always look at Future Sight when making new sets, but it gets harder and harder to find appropriate spots. I don’t think we’re done yet.

Is a Future Sight 2 style set possible also as a Standard legal set? I'm worried that with the prevalence and popularity of Universes Beyond and Modern Horizons, there doesn't seem like there would be room or space for a Future Sight 2 supplemental set but I REALLY REALLY want one.

Last time we did it as a premier set it caused all sorts of problems. It needs a complexity higher than premier sets want to be.

With all the love for showcase frames lately, and the return of the retro frame, can I request the future sight frame on new cards? I always loved the look of it

To clarify could a cameo mechanic be a future sight mechanic that hasn't been reused so like say an aura swap cameo mechanic card

A cameo is more than naming of something we’re trying rather than a hard and fast rules set. We haven’t discussed cameo-ing Future Sight mechanics that haven’t appeared elsewhere, so I don’t know whether or not we’d do them.
