Fowl Play

Semantic Fun with Card Names

New 10 Feb 2022 Asked by llanowarminotaur 41 Comments

Hi Mark, on the question of homonyms, we also have the following pairs: Foul Play and Fowl Play, Gorilla Tactics and Guerilla Tactics, Waste Land and Wasteland, and the only that is neither Un- nor Mystery Booster, Incite and Insight. There may be others, but I only checked card names consisting entirely of real words.

FYIThanks for doing the research.

Did you ever consider making today's TftP "fowl play" instead?

Blue's Foul Play

What is a good way to explain to a friend why you are annoyed that they throw "fowl play"s into their mono blue decks to deal with your creatures? I don't want to ban un cards in this playgroup because things like Poultrygeist or Hurloon Wrangler (which will always get through on me), are fun.

Blue has black-bordered cards that do similar things. I’m not sure your concern with Fowl Play.

Turn to Frog Origin

Did the idea for "turn to frog" come from "fowl play"?

The Un-sets have had a lot of influence on black bordered Magic so possibly.
