are the seasonal basics of Bloomborrow a reference to Extremely Slow Zombie? :)

Acorn Cards Integration

New 02 Sep 2023 Asked by relicmtg 50 Comments

I know that playing acorn cards with non-acorn cards together has always been an intention for you when designing acorn, so I wanted to let you know that my Commander playgroup has found a fun way to do that! We have a deck of 70 curated acorn cards that any player can pay 3 mana to reveal the top and play it for free. You might get something fairly weak like Extremely Slow Zombie, but you might also get something strong like Earl of Squirrel. Thought you might find our approach interesting!

Cool! Thanks for sharing.

Considering Extremely Slow Zombie Mechanism

New 26 Dec 2021 Asked by a-disgusted-green-dorito 32 Comments

I’ve been thinking about Extremely Slow Zombie recently and while I understand why last strike can’t be easily implemented I was wondering if the game can handle the rules text “any creatures defending this one gain first strike” as that gives pseudo last strike in a way

There are ways to kind of mimic it, but it’s both a little clunky to write out and doesn’t allow the coolest feature of last strike, triple strike.

Do you get style points if you have all four versions of Extremely Slow Zombie on the field at once?

Absolutely.

Unstable Secrets Maintenance

With all this information coming out about the alternate arts - and alternate rules texts - on different cards in Unstable, how hard was it to keep quiet about what the 'joke' was for cards like Very Cryptic Command and Extremely Slow Zombie?

I have a lot of practice keeping quiet about things.

Zombie Strike Ruling

New 24 Nov 2017 Asked by lifeoflaurence-deactivated20210 40 Comments

I have an Un-rules question. I don't understand the UnFAQ's ruling on Extremely Slow Zombie and it gaining first and double strike. I don't understand why the Extremely Slow Zombie ends up dealing damage twice when it gains first strike and three times when gaining double strike. If I enchant a creature that deals damage in just the regular combat phase with a Cartouche of Solidarity, its damage changes from regular to first strike; it doesn't end up with double strike. Why is the ESZ different?

First strike and last strike are two different
abilities. Imagine for example that a creature has lifelink and squirrellink. If it deals combat damage, it doesn’t have to choose between gaining life or making squirrels. Here’s the quirky interaction. If you grant a creature with last strike, say Extremely Slow Zombie, first strike during combat but after first strike damage, it will deal damage during normal strike because that’s how first strike works. (Note that “normal strike” is not an actual term, I’m just using it for clarity.) Then because last strike has the same interaction with normal strike as first strike does, last strike damage wouldn’t happen because damage happened during normal strike. This is due to the fact that each first strike and last strike have a relationship with normal strike. They don’t though have a relationship with each other.

Split Strike Mechanic

If you give Extremely Slow Zombie first strike, will it deal first and last strike damage (but not regular)?

Yes. I call it split strike.

Triple Strike Mechanics

What happens if I give Extremely Slow Zombie double strike? Does it essentially have triple strike or does double strike overwrite last strike?

It has triple strike.
