Ensoul Artifact

Misnamed Card Types

New 12 Feb 2022 Asked by chocolatechipmarshmallowpizza 26 Comments

If or when: More cards with the names of card types they aren't (like Creature Bond, Ensoul Artifact, Tribal Flames and Land Tax)?

I assume when. We make a lot of cards.

Skullclamp Creature Scenario

New 31 Dec 2019 Asked by astralzucchini 36 Comments

if you turn skullclamp into a creature (via something like ensoul artifact) and have out a goblin haberdasher, does the skullclamp gain menace?

No, the Skullclamp is not wearing a hat. Yes, it is a hat, but that’s not what the Habberdasher cares about.

Animated Hat Dilemma

If I cast Ensoul Artifact on Kindslaver while I have Goblin Haberdasher on the battlefield, does the Kindslaver ave menace?

One of my favorite parts of answering Un-rules questions is how often they transcend rules and start to become philosophy questions. Is an animated hat “wearing” a hat? I would say yes, it is wearing its hat-ness for all to see. : )

Planeswalker Abilities Design

New 28 Feb 2015 Asked by atticusgatsby 52 Comments

I really enjoy the fact that planeswalker abilities are often cards we know and love. Kiora can cast Explore, Jace can Brainstorm, etc. Sometimes a planeswalker has abilities which are not cards but later become cards (e.g. Tezzeret casts Ensoul Artifact). It's brilliant flavour. I have two questions about this: (1) Do you prefer to design planeswalkers with abilities that correspond to cards, or find that too restrictive? (2) Can we expect to see more abilities become cards in the future?

We do it when we can but it’s not something we want to make a restriction.

Beating Ensoul Artifact

New 16 Aug 2014 Asked by idesama 29 Comments

Dear Maro, I know it's been a while since we were in touch back when I was in Unglued. Good times. Anyway, I'm a tourney player now, and while I find I just roll right over b/g decks, for some reason I cannot beat Ensoul Artifact. What is a savage feline made out of processed wood pulp to do?

Try to get a hold of Meteorite. : )

Art Commission Timing

New 17 Jul 2014 Asked by kandykidzero 50 Comments

Being a fan of using the "Rock, Paper, Scissors" cards (whoever made those is a designing genius), I feel there may have been a missed opportunity with the art of M15. We have "Rock" in the form of "Meteorite", "Scissors" in the form of "Ensoul Artifact", but the closest thing I could find to "Paper" is "Wall of Mulch" and I feel that even that is stretching. At what point is art usually commissioned again?

Sign In Blood has paper in its art.

Ensoul Artifact Template

New 03 Jul 2014 Asked by esrix 58 Comments

Why does Ensoul Artifact say "base power and toughness"? That's very confusing. What's a base? Is this a template change?

It’s a new template. It means instead of their written power/toughness (what’s actually printed on the card) it is now a 3/3. All things that change the p/t (auras, equipment and counters) still work as normal.
