Elspeth Conquers Death

Monowhite Enchantment Control

New 29 Mar 2020 Asked by weirdoofoz 40 Comments

its really great that elspeth conquers death is a card that falls perfectly into white's slice of the pie and is undoubtedly very powerful. It's made even better when you can bounce it to repeat its effects. Could returning your own enchantments or sagas to hand be in monowhite's slice of the pie?

Returning enchantments from graveyard to hand is already in White’s slice of the pie.

Elucidating White's Reanimation Properties

So, moving forward, White as a colour has restrictive reanimation specifically for low CMC creatures? With that considered, is Elspeth Conquers Death a colour-bend/break, or am I misunderstanding what White can do in terms of reanimation?

White can reanimate creatures. It primarily reanimates small (cheap CMC) creatures or iconically white creatures (angels, soldiers, etc.), but it can reanimate any creature on occasion. White can also reanimate planeswalkers, although this is done infrequently.

Saga Mechanic Utilization

In the today's Making Magic article, you mentioned that one of the reasons saga won't be evergreen is that they "require worlds with stories that the audience knows." While I am sure that makes sagas easier to design in a set, aren't sagas capable of depicting new stories as well? In TBD a few sagas depict stories that did not exist before the set released, such as The Binding of the Titans and Elspeth Conquers Death.

We can do a little works building with them, but they work best when playing into known stories.

Counter Type Changes

Can black border (or silver border, for that matter) cards change counter types? I.e., change +1/+1 counters into -1/-1 counters, or poison counters into energy counters. I know cards are able to have counters that they don't care about put on them (i.e., putting a loyalty counter on a creature with Elspeth Conquers Death) so it seems possible, but it also seems like something that wouldn't be done, at least in the current state of Magic.

Silver border could easily do it. Black border might be able to do it. I’m not sure.

White Card Improvements

Mark, as someone who come here a lot to ask about White I must say that some things made me really happy in Theros Beyond Death. Elspeth Conquers Death was amazing (and I hope to see more of these effects in White cards :) ) and Taranika, Shatter the Sky, the pegasus archon and Heliod were pretty amazing cards. Congratulations to all the team!

We are working on white.
