Pack Collation Improvements

New 23 May 2024 Asked by ganymederise 4 Comments

I know pack collation is a complicated and detailed process that most players (myself included) know little about, but after two sets of drafting play boosters, I'd like to ask if it's possible to collate them to avoid duplicate cards in a pack and ensure there is at least one card of every color per pack. Duplicate rares and packs missing a color can really mess with draft signaling, and my naive self wonders if collation is a place to improve the draft experience without harming collectors.

Ideally, packs should avoid duplicates within each pack. Duplicates within a booster box are a bit trickier to avoid. We can guarantee four out of the five colors in most packs, and five in some. We haven’t found a way in the current system to hit all five in every booster pack.

Booster Price Clarification

New 05 May 2024 Asked by mrmoustachemm 28 Comments

"I will note that the price of boosters didn’t go up." - Maybe what you mean by this is that the wholesale price didn't go up, but (at least in my country) the price of Play Boosters is more than the price Set Boosters were. Maybe this is a distributor issue, but the fact is I've had to pay more since the change.

Wizards is charging the same price for a play booster that we charged for a set booster. The price of a booster box went up because set booster boxes were 30 booster packs and play booster boxes have 36 booster packs.

Rare Lands in Commander

New 05 Mar 2024 Asked by lolling-stones-blog 54 Comments

Hi Mark,
Is it possible to reduce the variety of rare lands that come out of Commanders of the same set?
I bought the Doctor Who Collector Booster Box that is full of them and this inhibits me from buying the Fallout collector booster box, because I would find the same lands (too many) of the Doctor Who edition with different art, instead of the new cards created ad hoc.
50 rare lands are an obstacle that will stop me from buying the next UB collectors too. Is there a way to drastically reduce this number? Thanks

Land design is one of the most restricted veins. In addition, there is a lot of demand for more printings of certain lands. Those two factors combined push us doing more repeat lands in Commander products.

Booster Box Preferences

New 17 Oct 2023 Asked by mangofisher74 14 Comments

As someone who is equal part collector/pack cracker and limited player (my main format) I thank you and studio X for the change. I am often split between what booster box to pick and recently my play group has come to the conclusion that 1/2 set and 1/2 draft boosters is actually the best draft (we do 4 packs since only four of us for limited). Looks like you guys came to the same conclusion :). Thanks!

You’re welcome. : )

Booster Box Contents

Re: Play Boosters. Your article didn't indicate how many booster packs would be in a Booster Box. Will it be 36 like Draft or 30 like Set?

The article did specify. Play booster boxes will have 36 booster packs in them so you can run three drafts between two booster boxes.

Unsolicited Material Protocol

If a custom printed booster box of a set I designed was sent to the WotC headquarters, would anyone there draft it?

Unfortunately, we can’t look at unsolicited material.

Feedback on Box Art

New 09 May 2023 Asked by jarethbulge 23 Comments

Hey Maro, I know this isn't your department but you're kinda the feedback guy! The March of the Machines collectors booster box art is the best graphic design I've ever seen on a magic product (and that's a high bar). Out of control cool. Street art cyberpunk comic book? Sign me up for a pre-order! However, I was extremely disappointed that the style of art on the box isn't part of the art design for the set. I know art gets commissioned for sealed product, but what goes on the box and the packs usually reflects the feel or visual style of the cards inside, and this awesome design isn't reflected in the set itself. I'm still looking forward to my shiny cardboard, but it is a little bit of a feel bad to pre-order expecting one thing and getting another. Then again, having packaging design so good it sells itself is not the worst reason to cause some minor disappointment. Thanks for the great game!

We try hard to make the packaging look different to make sure that people know which product they are buying. For some of those products, they are all (mostly) pulling from the same group of cards, so it’s a tricky balance to establish that every booster conveys what’s in it yet not look too much like other products from the same product line.

Limited Environment Excitement

New 05 Apr 2023 Asked by strymon 29 Comments

I’m really excited for what I’m seeing from MOM. I was already planning on picking up a draft booster box, but this Limited environment appears to be so unique I may have to pick up a second one.

Glad you’re enjoying what you see.

Hop-Generated Diversity

New 19 Dec 2022 Asked by mangofisher74 20 Comments

Loved the bonus sheet podcast. The behind the scenes ones are my favorite. Are the hoppers ever programmed to effect draft booster box distributions of rares or special cards like “masterpiece” cards

The hoppers are just that, a bin full of cards. The programming is about which hopper bin to drop for each slot. We could put sone special cards in their own hopper and drop it into a booster pack on a very infrequent rate.

Two-Person Draft Format

How would you play Unfinity with only two people and a booster box?

There are a number of two-person draft formats. I’d suggest Winston draft.

Unfinity Set Delay Reaction

New 24 Apr 2022 Asked by f-fuusuus 32 Comments

It's a real shame Unfinity got delayed, I've been playing this game since the first Kamigawa set on-and-off but Unfinity was going to be the first booster box I would ever buy. Is there anything extra you can talk about the set while it's still a few months away?

It’s the first set that I led every aspect of the design from exploratory design to vision design to set design. I’m super proud of how it turned out.

Keeping Booster Boxes Sealed

New 31 Mar 2022 Asked by thasgar 40 Comments

Amongst limited players, how common is it for players to keep a booster box sealed with plans to draft it in the future? Is there market research on that? (I find that I do so quite a bit)

It’s pretty common for enfranchised players who love drafting.

About Dakkon Art

Mark, did the Dakkon art of the booster box not receive a card version?

We often commission art just for the box.

Time Spiral Box Artwork

What is the card art on the time spiral remastered booster box?

It’s not card art. Sometimes boxes use art specifically made for the box.

Difference in Pack Order

New 31 Jan 2021 Asked by mangofisher74 30 Comments

Last night while opening boosters noticed the prerelease bundle boosters open C to R/MR then to token while the booster box boosters made in Japan opened exactly opposite. Token - R - C. Why the difference? Is wizards aware the difference between US and Japan pack order?

Every printer has a different drop order depending on their machinery.

Feasibility of All-Foil Packs

New 28 Jun 2020 Asked by bardoly 40 Comments

I realize that it's too late for Jumpstart now, and it probably wouldn't work well for standard releases, but do your printers have the ability to print a complete pack of foil cards? i.e. one completely foil pack per booster box or something like that? That would have been quite something to open a complete pack of goblins, elves, etc..., and it be entirely foil.

There is a weight problem of randomized all-foil packs. They weigh more. You could tell that it was all-foil before it was opened.

Jumpstart Pack Uniqueness

New 19 Jun 2020 Asked by tired-angry-robot 46 Comments

For Jumpstart, does each Booster box come with 24 unique packs, or is there the possibility of getting duplicate packs in the same box?

It is possible to get duplicates.

Enjoying Ikoria Booster Box

New 16 May 2020 Asked by chairwomanmao 43 Comments

Hi Mark! Got a box if IKO today and I have to say I LOVED the alt arts mixed into the packs. We even cracked a couple more just for fun because it was so exciting to see all the cards! Big fan of the increased rate and the art style

You are not alone. And I’ve seen the future and the team making them are not slowing down doing amazing things.

Ikoria Artwork Availability

New 11 Apr 2020 Asked by aztyn-games 29 Comments

I'm really excited for Ikoria, but was wondering well the variant art be available in regular boosters at all or will it be collector's edition only?

The showcase art (the comic book-styled art) and the borderless planeswalkers can be found in draft boosters and the Godzilla series are box toppers in the draft booster box.
