Is Avalanche Riders too powerful for Standard?

I’m not a developer, but I think it’s too strong. Now go ask the developer’s Tumblr blog for a real answer.

When you say vanity cards do you also mean cards like Avalanche Riders that had the likeness of the professional player in the art too?

Yes.

Avalanche Riders Creation

Just came back from a weekend of wintersports with family and friends. Have you got amy trivia on Avalanche Riders ?

It was the first Invitational card to get made even though it was the prize for Darwin Kastle for winning the second Invitational (held in Rio de Janeiro). We had not promised Darwin his picture would be in the art but as luck would have it, I was the person writing the card concepts for Urza’s Legacy (the only time I did it outside of an Un-set) so I asked the artist to use the provided photo and a tradition began.

Stone Rain Discussion

I understand you don't want a return to an environment where you can ritual out a turn two Rain of Tears into a Stone Rain then Avalanche Riders. And neither do I, really (though I have a strange urge to put together a Saga era deck to do just that in order to wind up my mates). But Stone Rain is absolutely iconic and I'd love to see it back in a core set. As long as you keep other 3/4 mana LD or relevant support cards out it shouldn't break the format, surely?

Zendikar originally reprinted Stone Rain. We felt it was a great reprint in a set where land mattered. Playtesting proved it was too good.
